Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny fined £20,000 for smoking

Arsenal first goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been fined £20,000 by Arsenal for smoking in the shower after the defeat at St. Mary's Stadium on New Year's Day. Szczesny had bad day on the match against Southampton as he was responsible for both goals which Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic scored.

Former Arsenal midfielder John Jensen had commented on Danish TV that Szczesny would not play again this season because of his bad behavior, but Arsenal officials denied that. The fact is Szczesny didn't keep the net against Hull City in the last FA Cup match. The reason why David Ospina took his place is maybe because of his poor form, bad behavior or it was coincidence and Wenger planed to rest the first goalkeeper for cup matches.

The manager Arsene Wenger has spoken loudly against smoking in the past when the  midfielder Jack Wilshere having been pictured with a cigarette in 2013. He said about that:

"I disagree completely with that behavior. There are two things - first of all when you are a football player you are an example and as well you don't do what damages your health. The fact is that you can damage your health at home, you can smoke at home and you can drink at home, and nobody sees it, but when you go out socially you also damage your reputation as an example."

Arsene Wenger had no comment for this case, but for sure has the same opinion. The Polish goalkeeper was forced to apologize for his behavior.

Wojciech Szczesny is fifth consecutive season in Arsenal and mostly of that as a first goalkeeper choice. The last season he was one of his best and won the Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets in the Premier League last season, shared with Chelsea's Petr Cech (both keeping 16 clean sheets). Arsenal have 25 conceded goals so far in current season and kept the clean sheet on five matches, so this season for sure will not be the best for Szczesny.

It remains uncertain if Wenger will punish Szczesny by dropping him from the team for next match against Stoke City.

However, his confidence is not at the highest level at the moment. With or without him, Arsenal will have a problem to keep clean sheet in the next rounds.
