Atletico Madrid players in dreamland after demolished Real Madrid with 4:0
Atletico Madrid demolished La Liga leaders Real Madrid with 4:0 at Stadio Vicente Calderon in the last Madrid derby. The players were in delirium as they destroyed the actual European champions. Tiago opened the results before Saul doubled the lead with a magnificent bicycle kick goal, while Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic completed the convincing victory. The visitors were missing some regulars, but the key players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema were in the team. However, Ronaldo showed the worst performances in this season. Real had only four shots during all match and only one of them on the target. Opposite of that, Atletico had 17 shots, 8 on target and four of them were successful. The hosts were effective at creating goalscoring opportunities from long shot situations, the flanks and set-pieces and most important, they were successful at finishing. The actual La Liga Champions completely outplayed and destroyed the actual European Champions.
This derby is more than an ordinary match. Real and Atletico are clubs with contrasting identities and very different fates. Historically, Real have long been seen as the establishment club. On the other side, Atletico was always characterized by a "sentimiento de rebeldía" (a sense of rebellion), although during the early Francisco Franco years, it was Atletico that was the preferred team of the regime, being associated with the military airforce. General Franco, however, sought to make political capital out of Real's European Cup titles at a time when Spain was internationally isolated; said one minister, "Real Madrid are the best ambassadors we've ever had." Thus, Atletico fans regularly chanted that Real was "El equipo del gobierno, la verguenza del país" (The team of the government, the shame of the country) and allegedly adopted a more left-wing slant. The Santiago Bernabeu, Real's stadium, is alongside banks and businesses on the classy Paseo de la Castellana street, and the Vicente Calderon (Atletico stadium) can be found besides the new and really expensive park along the Manzanares River, near the Cathedral and the Royal Palace. Real draw greater support because of their historically greater resources and success, while Atletico claim to have a more working class fan base, which comes particularly from the south of the city.
It is the first time in 64 years that Real have lost three straight games from their neighbors, but this was different – this was embarrassing for the richest club in football, smothered from the first kick to last. The coach Carlo Ancelotti said it was "the worst game we have played since I have been coach." If something is easy for him, it is to analyze the match:
"It is easy to analyze this game because Atletico were better in every facet of the game: they fought more, had more quality on the ball, had better organization, everything. We will reflect on it in the coming days with a cool head. We will suffer a lot from this defeat, but we need to change this attitude and avoid it happening in another game in the future.
"We failed at everything, we lost all the tackles, all the high balls. We didn't have one player who played well."
Equally as unhappy was the biggest star Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Real Madrid cannot lose 4:0 against anyone," he said.
"We lacked desire, attitude, everything. The team wasn't fresh mentally or physically, but there are no excuses. The damage is done."
On the other side Atletico Madrid were excellent and all the players had a good day. The Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic has described playing in this derby as "a pleasure". He told Nova TV:
"We all had to give our best to win this game and it was really a pleasure to outplay Real Madrid like that. It doesn't mater if I score or not, what is important is that we win games. But of course I am glad I scored."
Midfielder Tiago, who opened the scoring, paid tribute to the preparations of head coach Diego Simeone prior to the match:
"We wanted to keep up the pressure on Barcelona and Madrid in the league and we got the three points on a very good afternoon for us. We didn't give Real Madrid any openings and everything went our way from kick-off. Real played during the week and that worked against them. We knew that with our fans behind us we are strong and we showed that. We wanted to exploit the spaces that Real left behind them. We got into the game early and we found the areas where we could hurt Madrid. Our manager has shown what he is about; everything he told us to do came together on the pitch.
"I have been through the times when we couldn't win [the derby]. Not much has changed, but our confidence has and everything went our way. We have everything very clear in our minds and we are a strong team. We knew if we followed what we have been doing that victory was possible."
Atletico Madrid had no win over Real Madrid at Vicente Calderon in league match since season 1998/99 when they won 3:1. Their last convincing clear victory with 4:0 was long time ago, in the season 1976/77.
This was the sixth mutual match in this season in all competition and Real Madrid are still without a single victory against Atletico. Diego Simeone's men won 2:1 as guests at the beginning of the season, they were better in Copa del Rey and have eliminated Real for further competition. They were also better in Super Cup at the beginning of the season. Maybe Diego Simeone has find a secret recipe for success against Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid cut the gap which made the battle for title more interesting. Led by Diego Simeone, they stunned the football word by finally breaking the duopoly of Real and Barcelona. Los Rojiblancos are made third favourites to defend their title by the bookmakers.
