Djokovic and Sharapova Athletes of the Year according to the US Sports Academy
World No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic and the WTA No.2 Maria Sharapova are the United States Sports Academy's 2014 Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The US Sports Academy is an independent, non-profit, accredited, special mission sports university which exists for 42 years. The Athlete of the Year is the final part of the Academy’s Athlete of the Month program, which recognizes the accomplishments of men and women in sports around the World. The public voted for athletes online every month. The male and female who are monthly winners participated in the final voting for the prestigious Athlete of the Year honor. Djokovic and Sharapova were chosen form strong competition which included 12 male and 12 female athletes from 12 different countries.
In a male selection were names like football player Lionel Messi, NFL star Peyton Manning (American football quarterback that play for the Denver Broncos), tennis player Rafael Nadal, marathon runners Michael Wardian and Dennis Kimetto, boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, golfers Rory McIlRoy and Bubba Watson, baseball player Clayton Kershaw and short-track speed skater Viktor Ahn.
In a female category Maria Sharapova was voided as best between tennis players Serena Williams and Petra Kvitova, golfers Michelle Wie and Lydia Ko, marathon runner Abebech Bekele, basketball player Diana Taurasi, short-track speed skater Park Seung-hi, long-distance runner Genzebe Dibaba, college basketball player Breanna Stewart, swimmer Katie Ledecky and shot put athlete Valerie Adams.
This is the second time as Djokovic received award from this Academy after his amazing 2011. He won seven titles in 2014. Novak was winner at Wimbledon for the second time in his career, had four ATP Masters 1000 titles (Indian Wells, Miami, Rome and Paris), one ATP 500 tournament (Beijing) and was the best at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London. He played 69 matches this year and won 61 of them and finished the year as No.1 for the third time in his career. Djokovic for sure deserved the award as best Athletes for this year.
Russian tennis player, Maria Sharapova, the World No.2 won Madrid masters, French Open for the second time in his career and had title in Beijing. Sharapova was seeded 7th at French Open and succeed to move up on the second position and now is just 467 points behind Serena Williams.
