Fernando Torres returns to his first love Atletico Madrid
Spanish striker Fernando Torres has rejoined to his first club Atletico Madrid where he started his career at the age of seventeen. He will join Atletico on 18-month loan deal from AC Milan which means to the end of 2015/16 season. El Nino returns at Vicente Calderon.
Torres is born in Fuenlabrada, south of Madrid and started to train in Atletico Madrid's youth team at the age of 13 and progressed to the first team squad. He played the longest in Atletico Madrid, from 2001 to 2007, had 214 league appearances and scored 84 goals. Torres has joined Liverpool after that where he stayed until 2011. He scored 65 goals playing in Reds' shirt. The next three years Torres spent in Chelsea, but wasn't successful as earlier. His transfer to Chelsea in 2011 was worth 50 million pounds and remain one of the most valuable in the Premier League, even he didn't accomplish the high expectations. Torres scored only 20 goals for the Blues and was sent on loan to Italian side AC Milan where he had 10 league appearances and netted only once. The fans at San Siro were not satisfied with his performances and Torres decided to go back to Vicente Calderon.
Atletico Madrid is his first love and his only home, as he said in one interview. His is obviously happy for this deal and added:
"I’m happy because I’ve said many many times that I can’t hide where I come from. It’s an honor to be a part of Atletico Madrid. I made my dream come true when I played my first game for them at 17. This has been a fantastic club over the last few years, winning many trophies. I did my career outside Spain but there is a time when everyone must go back home. I was in the stands when I was a kid. I feel it is a privilege to have the chance to go back. I’m looking forward to enjoying playing and training again."
Atletico Madrid currently sit on the 3rd position in Primera Division, four points behind Real Madrid and three behind Barcelona. They have scored 31 goals which is 10 less than Barcelona and 24 less than scoring machine Real Madrid. The departure of Diego Costa is the main reason for that. Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic with 6 scored goals are the most efficient in Atletico squad at the moment. The coach Diego Simeone believes Torres can add something to his side, that he still has much to contribute. Torres had a more secondary role in Chelsea, so as in Milan, his efficiency and confidence decreased as he changed the clubs. He has 30 years now and we will see if Simeone can use the best from him and return his confidence. It is a lot of question marks over his diminished physical capabilities and Torres comes back with more hopes than expectations. Can the Calderon crowd will be motive plus for upturn in his form? In the next season and a half we will see that.
