Victor Valdes signed with Manchester United
The former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has signed an 18-month contract with Manchester United. Valdes started his career in Barcelona youth team and made his senior debut in 2002. He spent 11 seasons at Nou Camp and is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the club's history. Victor Valdes kept the net in more than 500 official games for Barcelona and won 21 major titles, including six La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League trophies and nine Spanish cups. He has 20 appearances for the Spanish national team and was part of World Cup in South Africa and European Championship in 2012 Poland and Ukraine when Spain were champions. Valdes holds the club records as goalkeeper with most appearances in the league and in official competition and broke Andoni Zubizarreta's records. His contract with Barcelona ended in July 2014 mostly because of his serious knee ligament injury who has got at the end of the last season. He joined Manchester United during January transfer window and is still waiting on his first match for the Red Devils.
Victor Valdes was happy with the new opportunity:
"It is a real honor to sign for Manchester United. I would like to thank Louis van Gaal and the club for allowing me to do my rehabilitation and to train with the team. From my short time here I can already see this is a very special club. I worked with Louis van Gaal during my time at Barcelona and to have the opportunity to work with him here at Manchester United is a dream come true."
He also added that one year as Barcelona keeper is like three years at another team and the pressure is immense. Premier League is his new challenge.
The manager Louis van Gaal has a nice words about Valdes:
"I am delighted Victor has signed for the club. Victor is a very experienced goalkeeper and his record speaks for itself. I have said on many occasions that Manchester United will always be interested in the best players. Victor has remained very professional throughout his rehabilitation from injury and has been very impressive during his training sessions with the first team over the past weeks. He joins the club as the number two goalkeeper and is a great addition to the first team."
Victor Valdes (32 years) will be back-up for David De Gea (24 years) who was United's player of the year for the last season. De Gea has also 18 months remaining on his contract with Manchester United, but he has been linked with rumors for transfer to Real Madrid. De Gea kept the net on all matches in this season and conceded 20 goals, which is an average of one goal per match and is between the best records in the Premier League. Manchester United are unbeaten in the last ten rounds and moved up on the third position. De Gea is between the key players who are deserved for that improvement. Victor Valdes wont be happy as second-choice goalkeeper and, even said De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the World at the moment, he will fight for his place. Louis van Gaal does not see a problem with two great goalkeepers fighting for one position. He commented about that:
"He has to have the ambition to beat De Gea. My ambition is that I have the best players who can collaborate with each other to form the best team in the world."
Manchester United is maybe the best solution for Victor Valdes at the moment and the time will show if he can become a first goalkeeper.
