Boxing Day football is back, properly back
Nothing in the football calendar beats Boxing Day, and no day is busier for Christmas football betting. The leftovers are in the fridge, the fire's on and there's a full afternoon of football to pick through. Last Christmas the Premier League managed one Boxing Day game, Manchester United v Newcastle. This year there are seven, starting with Aston Villa v Leeds at 12:30 and finishing with Newcastle v Manchester City under the lights at 20:00.
Why the change? 26 December 2026 falls on a Saturday. The league has to squeeze 33 weekend rounds and only five midweek rounds into the season, and a Saturday Boxing Day doesn't use up one of those precious midweek slots. So the traditional feast is back on, and the fixtures were locked in with more than three months' notice.
The 2026/27 season is seven weeks old and every club has played five. Another 11 rounds will have gone by the time the turkey comes out, so the table will look very different. It's a fortnight that rewards homework: rest gaps, rotation, a Christmas table that's younger than usual and a Boxing Day card that's begging to be thrown into a seven-fold. We'll take each in turn and finish with our betting angles for the holidays.
