Eight minutes into stoppage time
Eight minutes into stoppage time at Goodison Park, James Tarkowski smashed a shot into the roof of the net and the old ground erupted. It was 12 February 2025, the 120th and last Merseyside derby played at Goodison, and Everton had just snatched a 2-2 draw from a Liverpool side that would have gone nine points clear at the top of the table with a win.
On paper it should never have been close. Liverpool were title favourites, Everton were stuck in the bottom half, and the prices said so. Yet Beto put Everton ahead, Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in front in the 73rd minute, and a long VAR check preceded the last-gasp equaliser. The final whistle brought a mass scuffle and red cards, including one for Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
That is derby betting in a nutshell: the team with all the quality doesn't always get the result, and the team with all the pride sometimes does. Here's how we'd approach these games, from where the market gets carried away to the bets worth a look and how to stake when the variance is high.
