Coritiba vs Botafogo: Two Leaking Defences, Plenty of Goals Expected

Preview

Mr SimpleMr Simple

Right, so we've got Coritiba hosting Botafogo on 12 October, and honestly this one's got the feel of two teams that've been having a bit of a rough patch. Let me walk you through it.

Coritiba have been absolutely hammered of late. Three days before this one, they went down 0-4 at Fluminense's ground, and before that, 0-5 at Vasco DA Gama. That's nine goals conceded in two games with nothing to show for it. Their last two matches have been a real eye-opener. Before that, though, they did manage a 3-3 draw at home against Atletico Paranaense (with a red card at half-time, mind you), and they beat Remo 3-2 away back on 31 August. So there's a flicker of life in the attack, but the defence has been a proper sieve.

Botafogo aren't exactly flying either. They lost 1-2 at home to Vasco DA Gama just five days ago (with a late red card to boot), and before that, 0-2 away at Mirassol. Two losses in a row, one goal scored, four conceded. But look at their wider record on the road: over their last 20 away games, they've won 8, drawn 3 and lost 9, averaging 1.35 points per game and 1.35 goals per game. That's a solid away record, even if the last couple of outings haven't been pretty.

Now, the head-to-head here is thin on recent meetings. The only one within the last 12 months was a 2-2 draw at Botafogo's ground back in April 2026. The older meetings — going back to 2022 — show Botafogo winning at their end and Coritiba winning at theirs, but those are historical and don't really tell us much about where these teams are now.

The numbers that jump out for me are the goals. Coritiba's last five games ALL finished with more than two and a half goals in them — 0-4, 0-5, 3-3, 1-2, 3-2. That's five out of five. Their home record over 20 games shows 9 of those 20 went over 2.5, and Botafogo's away record over 20 games has 11 of 20 over 2.5. Both sides have been involved in goals galore recently, even if they've been on the wrong end of most of them.

The counter-argument? Botafogo's last five games had only two over 2.5, and their last 10 has been 5-5 on the over/under split. Both teams are in a bit of a slump, and when two sides are struggling, you can get a tight, low-scoring affair. The draw at 3.53 is tempting given the 2-2 in April and the 0-0 against Palmeiras in Botafogo's last five, but I'm not convinced the market's 28.33% is the right price for that.

Key Points:

  • Coritiba's last 5 games all finished with over 2.5 goals (5/5)
  • Botafogo's away record: 8W 3D 9L over 20 games, 1.35 points per game
  • Only one recent head-to-head meeting: 2-2 draw at Botafogo's ground in April 2026
  • Both teams lost their last 2 matches
  • Coritiba home and Botafogo away records show 9/20 and 11/20 over 2.5 respectively

My verdict: I'm going with over 2.5 goals at 1.85. The evidence points to a game where both defences are leaking and the attack is still finding ways to score, even if it's not pretty.
