When the Eredivisie's 16th-placed side hosts the 9th-placed team, the natural instinct is to back the higher-ranked visitor. But my role is to sniff out value where others see only the table, and this Saturday's clash at the Erve Asito presents a compelling case for the underdog.
Heracles may sit perilously close to the relegation zone with just 14 points from 16 matches, but their recent form tells a different story—especially at home. Over their last ten games across all competitions, they've won five, drawn two, and lost three, scoring a remarkable 27 goals in the process. That's an average of 2.70 goals per game, and at home, that figure jumps to a blistering 3.40. Their recent results include an 8-2 demolition of PEC Zwolle, a 4-2 victory over GO Ahead Eagles, and just days ago, a 4-1 KNVB Beker win. Most tellingly, they pushed league leaders PSV Eindhoven hard in a 4-3 defeat, proving they can trouble any defence.
Heerenveen arrive with a more respectable league position and a solid, if unspectacular, away record. They've won 42.86% of their last seven away games, conceding just 1.00 goal per game on the road. Their 3-0 victory at Sparta Rotterdam on December 14th was impressive, and they held Ajax to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season. However, they've also suffered defeats to sides like PEC Zwolle (2-1) and Fortuna Sittard (2-0), showing they are far from invincible.
The head-to-head history adds intrigue. In the last nine meetings, Heerenveen holds a slight edge with four wins to Heracles' three, with two draws. At home, however, Heracles have won two and lost two against their visitors, demonstrating they can compete on their own turf. Their most recent encounter in March 2025 ended 1-1, suggesting minimal separation between the sides.
Statistically, this sets up as a classic clash of styles. Heracles are an offensive juggernaut at home but defensively vulnerable, having kept zero clean sheets in their last ten matches. Heerenveen are more measured and defensively organised away from home. The market has identified this, pricing Both Teams to Score at just 1.50 and Over 2.5 Goals at 1.53. The value, however, lies in challenging the assumption that Heerenveen's superior league position translates to a likely away win priced at 2.05.
Key Points:
Heracles average 3.40 goals per game at home in their last ten matches.
Heerenveen concede just 1.00 goal per game on average in their recent away fixtures.
Heracles have seen Both Teams Score in 80% of their last ten games.
The hosts have a 50% home win rate against Heerenveen in their head-to-head history.
- Heracles are on a shorter rest (4 days vs Heerenveen's 6) but are playing at home.
As a tipster who lives for the overlooked, the 3.20 price for a Heracles home win holds significant appeal. This is a team that scores for fun in front of their own fans and has already shown it can go toe-to-toe with the league's best. Heerenveen are solid, but they are not a top-tier side and have shown vulnerability on the road. In what promises to be an open, high-event match, the value lies with the home underdog to cause a surprise.
