Right then, let's talk about this tasty Eredivisie clash. AZ Alkmaar, sitting 5th, welcome high-flying NEC Nijmegen, who are 4th and have a game in hand. On paper, it's a proper top-six scrap, but the form book tells a very different story for each side.
AZ are the solid citizens at home. In their last five at their place, they haven't lost (two wins, three draws), conceding a miserly 0.6 goals per game. They're tough to break down. But their recent results have been a mixed bag – a 1-0 win at Telstar, a 1-1 draw with Excelsior, and a 3-1 loss at PEC Zwolle. The standout was that incredible 6-0 demolition of Ajax in the cup, which shows they can blow anyone away on their day.
Then you've got NEC. Blimey, what a run they're on! Eight wins and two draws in their last ten, unbeaten since who knows when. They're scoring for fun, averaging three goals a game on their travels. And it's not just against the little guys – they went to Feyenoord, who are second, and won 4-2. That's a proper statement result. The flip side? They can't keep a clean sheet to save their lives. Both teams have scored in 9 out of their last 10 games. They attack brilliantly but leave the back door open.
Now, the head-to-head makes for interesting reading. AZ might have the overall edge, but at home against NEC, they've only won one of the last four meetings. NEC even won the reverse fixture this season, 2-1. So this isn't a happy hunting ground for the hosts.
So what's gonna happen? You've got a rock-solid home defence against a free-scoring, leaky away attack. Something's got to give. I reckon NEC's firepower will get them a goal – they've scored at least twice in seven of their last ten. And AZ, with a decent attack of their own (2 goals per game at home), should find the net against a defence that concedes nearly two per game on the road.
The bookies have the odds for Over 2.5 goals at a short 1.44, which tells you they fancy goals too. But sometimes the maths adds up. Looking at the recent results, 6 of the last 9 clashes between these two have had over 2.5 goals. NEC's last 10 games have seen 8 go over. The goal expectancies point to nearly four goals. All signs point to the net bulging.
Key Points:
NEC's Form: Unbeaten in 10 (8W, 2D), scoring 3.0 goals per game away.
AZ's Home Strength: Unbeaten in last 5 at home (W2, D3), conceding only 0.6 per game.
Head-to-Head: NEC won the last meeting 2-1; AZ have only 1 win in last 4 home games vs NEC.
Goal Trends: Both teams score in 90% of NEC's games. Over 2.5 goals landed in 66% of H2H history.
- Table: NEC (4th, 35pts) have a game in hand over AZ (5th, 32pts).
The Simple Verdict:
This has all the makings of a cracker. NEC are too hot in front of goal right now to be kept quiet, even by a stubborn AZ defence. And AZ will likely get chances against NEC's generous backline. I can see goals at both ends and more than two in total. The value, for me, lies with the Over 2.5 Goals market.
My Tip: OVER 2.5 GOALS
