Hmm. In the cold of January, a battle of contrasts, this is. FC Augsburg, 15th in the table, at home they stand. SC Freiburg, 8th and looking upwards, but on the road they travel. Nine points separate them, yet the story deeper it goes.
Look at the recent path, we must. Augsburg, only two victories in their last ten journeys. But at home, a different beast they are. In their last six home matches, a third they win, a third they draw, a third they lose. More importantly, a fortress of defense they have built. Only 0.33 goals per game they concede at home. Clean sheets in four of their last ten overall. Yet, to score, a great struggle it is. Only 0.50 goals per game at home they muster. A 2-0 victory over the strong Bayer Leverkusen they achieved, a light in the darkness. But followed by a 0-0 with Werder Bremen and a 0-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund. A pattern of low-scoring stalemates, this is.
Freiburg, meanwhile, five wins in their last ten. At home, mighty they are: 80% wins, scoring two per game, conceding barely 0.40. But away? A different tale. Only 20% wins on the road, conceding 2.60 per game. A 4-3 thriller at Wolfsburg they won, but a 2-1 loss to the struggling Heidenheim they suffered. Then a 2-0 defeat at RB Leipzig. Jekyll and Hyde, they are.
The history between these sides, one-sided it is. In nine meetings, Freiburg six times victorious. The last clash, a 3-1 win for Freiburg in August. Over 2.5 goals in seven of those nine encounters, a common theme. But the past is not always the future. The present form of Augsburg at home suggests a lower-scoring affair.
Consider the numbers, I do. Augsburg at home averages only 12.6 shots, 4.2 on target. Freiburg away manages 10.4 shots, 3.8 on target. Possession is similar. The key is Augsburg's defensive solidity at home against Freiburg's leaky away defense. Yet, Freiburg's attack away still scores 1.40 per game. A puzzle, this is.
But the wisdom in the data, clear it becomes. Augsburg struggles to score. Freiburg struggles to defend on the road. Yet, Augsburg's home defense is strong. The most likely outcome? A game of few chances. A 1-0, a 0-0, perhaps a 0-1. For both teams to find the net, unlikely it seems. In Augsburg's last ten games, both teams scored only once. A 10% rate. At home, they have kept three clean sheets in their last six. Freiburg, away, have seen both teams score in half their games, but against an attack as blunt as Augsburg's, that may not repeat.
Key Points:
- Augsburg's Home Defense: Conceding only 0.33 goals per game at home in their last six.
- Augsburg's Goal Drought: Scoring only 0.50 goals per game at home; shut out in six of last ten matches overall.
- Freiburg's Road Woes: Winning only 20% of away games, conceding 2.60 goals per game on their travels.
- Head-to-Heady History: Freiburg dominant (6 wins in 9), but past meetings were high-scoring (Over 2.5 in 7 of 9).
- Fatigue Factor: Augsburg have had 7 days rest; Freiburg only 4, having played two matches in the last 14 days.
Summary: A low-scoring, tense encounter I foresee. Augsburg will look to be compact and frustrate. Freiburg will have possession but may lack sharpness after a busy schedule. The value, in the 'No' for both teams to score, it lies. At odds of 2.05, a bet with positive expectation this is.
