On paper, this looks like a classic top-versus-mid-table clash. Carlisle sit proudly in second place, locked on 55 points with leaders York, and arrive as the clear favourites with the bookmakers. Solihull Moors, nestled in ninth, are the definition of an underdog – but oh, what a dangerous underdog they are at home! My heart always beats for the little puppies, and the data suggests this pup has a real bite.
Let's start with the home side's recent form, because it's nothing short of spectacular. In their last ten matches, Solihull Moors have scored a whopping 28 goals, averaging 2.80 per game. Their home form is the real story: they are unbeaten in their last six at home, winning four and drawing two. During that run, they've been absolutely ruthless, putting seven past Tamworth, four past Sutton United, and three past a strong Scunthorpe side. The 5-1 demolition of Aldershot Town just a few days ago shows this attacking momentum is very much alive. They concede goals (only one clean sheet in ten), but they simply outscore their problems, averaging 3.5 goals per game on their own patch.
Carlisle, by contrast, have been efficient but far from invincible on the road. Their last ten games show six wins and four losses, with a more modest 1.40 goals scored per game. Their away record in that period is a perfectly balanced 50% win rate and 50% loss rate. The losses are instructive: a 2-0 defeat to the excellent Boreham Wood, a 3-1 loss to Woking, and a recent 1-0 FA Trophy upset at Chatham Town. Their victories have come against struggling sides like Gateshead and Boston United. This suggests that when facing organised, attacking teams away from home, Carlisle can be got at.
The only previous meeting this season ended 1-1, showing Solihull can compete. The goal expectancy models also hint at an upset, projecting the Moors to score more on average. Their attacking trend is improving, while Carlisle's goal-scoring form is actually in decline. Both teams have had equal rest, so fatigue shouldn't be a major factor.
Key Points:
Solihull Moors are unbeaten in their last six home games (W4 D2).
They are scoring an average of 3.5 goals per game at home recently.
Carlisle have lost three of their last six away matches.
The previous meeting this season ended in a 1-1 draw.
- Solihull's goal-scoring form is trending upwards; Carlisle's is trending down.
From my underdog-loving perspective, the value here is clear. The market heavily favours the high-flying visitors, but the raw data paints a picture of a potent, confident home side facing a top-side with notable away vulnerabilities. The odds of 3.00 for a Solihull Moors win offer significant value against a probability I believe is closer to 38%. It's time to back the little puppy to cause a major stir in the promotion race.
