The Serie B promotion race heats up as sixth-placed Cesena welcome ninth-placed Empoli in a clash defined by contrasting venue strengths. With both teams separated by seven points, this isn't just about league position—it's a classic case of a formidable home record colliding with a patchy away one. Let's crunch the numbers and see where the real betting value lies.
Cesena have built a genuine fortress at home. Their last five home matches read: a 3-2 win over Mantova, a 1-0 victory against Modena, a 3-0 thrashing of Avellino, a 2-1 win against Carrarese, and a 1-1 draw with Juve Stabia. That's four wins and a draw, translating to an 80% win rate. More importantly, they've been scoring freely, averaging 2.00 goals per game on home soil while conceding just 0.80. Their recent 2-0 loss away to high-flying Catanzaro and 1-0 defeat at Monza show they can struggle on the road against the elite, but at home, they've consistently dispatched mid-to-lower table opposition—exactly the profile Empoli fits.
Empoli's form is a tale of two venues. They've shown they can be dangerous, racking up a 5-0 home win over Bari and a 3-0 away victory at Avellino. However, their away form is inconsistent. In their last five road trips, they've beaten Mantova (1-0) and Avellino (3-0) but lost to Juve Stabia (2-0), Virtus Entella (1-0), and Modena (2-1). The pattern is clear: they can beat the strugglers but come up short against sides in the upper-mid table. Cesena, sitting comfortably in sixth, certainly qualify as the latter. Empoli's away attack also dips significantly, scoring just 1.00 goal per game on their travels compared to 1.80 at home.
While the historical head-to-head record heavily favours Empoli (3 wins, 2 draws in the last 5 meetings), those fixtures date back to 2018. For a value hunter like me, ancient history is just noise. The relevant signal is in the recent venue-specific data.
The underlying statistics reinforce the narrative. Cesena averages 13.0 shots and 4.0 on target per home game, with a solid 83.2% pass accuracy. Empoli, away from home, manages only 8.0 shots and 2.0 on target, with a lower 78.8% pass accuracy. This suggests Cesena will control the game and create the better chances.
Key Points:
Home Dominance: Cesena boasts an 80% win rate in their last 5 home games, scoring 2.0 goals per match.
Away Inconsistency: Empoli's last 5 away games: 2 wins against strugglers (Mantova, Avellino) and 3 losses to mid-table sides.
Attack vs Defence: Cesena's potent home attack (2.00 GPG) faces an Empoli away defence that concedes 1.00 GPG.
Statistical Edge: Cesena generates more shots and shots on target at home than Empoli does on the road.
- Trends: Cesena's goals conceded trend is declining, while Empoli's goals scored trend is declining away from home.
The Value Verdict:
The bookmakers have priced Cesena at 2.00 to win. Based on their stellar home form against teams of Empoli's calibre and Empoli's struggles on the road against similar opposition, I assess Cesena's true probability of winning to be closer to 58%. This creates a clear positive Expected Value (EV) opportunity of around +8%. In the long-term value game, that's a bet you take. The 'Both Teams to Score' market is a coin flip according to the data, and the goal line looks fairly priced, leaving the home win as the standout mispricing.
Summary: All the recent, relevant data points towards Cesena extending their strong home run. Empoli's away frailties against competent sides are likely to be exposed. At even money, the home win offers tangible betting value.
