Right then, we've got the Olympique derby on our hands this Sunday evening, and I reckon the bookies have got themselves in a proper muddle with the prices here. Marseille against Lyon at the Stade Vélodrome usually throws up a cracking contest, but looking at the recent form charts, these two are heading in opposite directions faster than a striker with the ball at his feet and the keeper to beat.
Lyon are absolutely flying, mate. Nine wins from their last ten matches – that's title-chasing form that is. They've been putting away teams left, right and centre, including a 5-2 thumping of Metz and a solid 1-0 win at Nantes. Even their European exploits have been spot on, beating PAOK 4-2 and Young Boys away from home. The only blot on their copybook was a 3-1 defeat at Strasbourg last time out, but even the best teams have an off day now and then. With 21 goals scored and just 9 conceded in those ten games, they're looking tighter than a drum.
Marseille, on the other hand, have been about as consistent as a dodgy Wi-Fi signal. Four wins from ten sounds alright until you look at the details – a 5-0 hammering by PSG, a 3-0 pasting from Club Brugge in Europe, and a 2-0 home defeat to Brest just last week. Sure, they put nine past Bayeux in the cup and smashed Angers 5-2 away, but they've also been leaking goals for fun – 20 in their last ten games. The 3-1 win over second-placed Lens shows they can turn it on against the big boys, but it's been too sporadic for my liking.
Now, I know what you're thinking – 'Mr Simple, Marseille have got the Indian sign over Lyon at home, winning three of the last four meetings there!' And you'd be right. The head-to-head record at the Vélodrome is strong for the hosts. But form is temporary and class is permanent, and right now Lyon are showing both. At 3.70 for the away win, the bookies are basically saying Lyon have got less than a 30% chance here. Given they've won 80% of their away games recently and Marseille are conceding two goals a game on average, that price is bigger than the queue for the bar at half-time.
Key Points:
- Lyon have won 9 of their last 10 matches, averaging 2.1 goals per game while conceding just 0.9
- Marseille have lost 4 of their last 10, shipping 20 goals in the process including 5 against PSG and 3 against Club Brugge
- Lyon have won 80% of their away games recently, scoring 2 goals per game on the road
- Marseille have won 75% of home meetings with Lyon historically, but lost the most recent encounter 1-0 in August 2025
- Both teams have been overperforming their expected goals (finishing deltas of 0.95 and 0.78), suggesting clinical striking
- The goal expectancies suggest a high-scoring affair with 3.35 total goals expected
Summary: Look, I know Marseille at home in this derby is usually a fortress, but Lyon are playing with a swagger that suggests they don't read the history books. At 3.70, the away win is simply too tempting to ignore given the gulf in current form. Get on Lyon to keep their title charge rolling.
