Match preview
Right, so we've got Austin hosting Vancouver Whitecaps on 18 October, and if you've been following the form book, this one's got a bit of a puzzle to it.
Austin have been having a bit of a nightmare. They lost 1–3 to Los Angeles FC three days before this one, and before that they were beaten 1–4 at home by Nashville SC. Two losses, two goals scored, seven conceded. That's not a great look, mate. Their current run is two straight defeats, and the xG numbers back it up — they've been facing 2.2 expected goals against per game over their last six matches with data. That's a lot of holes to plug.
On the flip side, Vancouver Whitecaps have been a lot more steady. They drew 0–0 at St. Louis City three days ago and 1–1 at Los Angeles FC a week before that — though that one had a red card in the sixth minute, so it was a bit of a scrappy affair. Before that, they lost 1–3 to Chicago Fire, but they've got a 3–0 win over Real Salt Lake from four weeks ago in the bag. Their last two have been draws, and their xG against is sitting at just 1.01 per game over their last three matches with data. That's a world of difference from what Austin's defence is dealing with.
Now, the head-to-head here is mostly historical. The only meeting within the last 12 months was back in September when Austin won 2–1 at Vancouver Whitecaps' ground. The older meetings go back two years and show Vancouver Whitecaps winning 6 of 11 overall, but those games are well and truly in the past. What matters now is the current form, and that's pointing towards a tight, low-scoring affair.
The venue records tell an interesting story. Over 20 home games, Austin have drawn 8 of them, and over 20 away games, Vancouver Whitecaps have also drawn 8. Both teams are comfortable with a point, and neither has been finding the winning formula lately. Austin's home record is 7 wins, 8 draws, 5 losses, and Vancouver Whitecaps' away record is 6 wins, 8 draws, 6 losses. The points per game is 1.45 for Austin at home and 1.3 for Vancouver Whitecaps away, so there's a slight edge to the hosts, but the last two games have blown that out of the water.
The best counter-argument to a draw is that Vancouver Whitecaps are simply the better side. Their away scoring is 1.5 per game over 20 matches, their xG against is far lower, and they've only lost one of their last five. If they click on the day, they could walk this one. But Austin at home do have a record of 8 clean sheets in 20 games, and they've failed to score in only 3 of those 20. They're not a team that just folds at home.
Key Points:
So here's where I land. Two teams that can't quite find a winner, both sitting on 8 draws in their venue records, and the recent form says neither side is in a position to dominate. The market is pricing the draw at 4.5, which implies about 22% chance. I think there's a bit more in it than that — I'd put it at roughly 25%. That's a small edge, but it's there, and the football backs it up.
My tip: Draw.
