Right, so Tondela are at home to take on Torreense on 10 October in the Segunda Liga, and I'll be honest — Tondela look the ones to fancy here, but not by a huge margin.
The big story is Tondela's form. They've won their last three games, scoring 10 and conceding just 1. That's a 5-1 thrashing of Imortal Albufeira in the cup, a 2-0 away at Portimonense, and a 3-0 home win over FC Porto B. Three wins in a row, ten goals, one conceded — that's a side that's clicking and looking dangerous.
Now, their home record over the last 20 games isn't exactly sparkling — 6 wins, 7 draws, 7 losses — but that's the wider record. The last five games tell a different story, and that's what matters when you're picking a match.
Torreense, on the other hand, are a bit more mixed. They've won their last game — a 2-1 away at Lillestrom in the Europa League — but before that it was a 0-0 at home to Leixoes and a 2-0 away at Benfica B. Their last five is 2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, and that 0-3 home defeat to Vizela six weeks ago stings a bit. Their current run is just one win.
The head-to-head here is all historical — no meetings in the last 12 months — so I can't lean on it for current form. What it does show is that Tondela have won 3 of 8 previous meetings, and at Tondela's ground the last two were a 2-2 draw and a 1-2 Torreense win. Dated stuff, but it tells you this fixture has been competitive.
Torreense's away record over 20 games is actually a touch better than Tondela's home record: 7 wins, 7 draws, 6 losses, 1.4 points per game, and they concede 0.85 per game away. That's a solid defensive record on the road. Tondela at home score 1.1 per game and concede 1.1, so it's not a huge gap on the numbers.
The counter-argument is real: Torreense have won their last two away games, their away defence is tight, and Tondela's home record over 20 games is only 30% wins. A draw or an away win is absolutely on the table, and I wouldn't be surprised if Torreense park the bus and grind out a point.
But Tondela's three-game winning run, the 10 goals and 1 conceded, and the fact they're at home with momentum behind them — that tips it for me. The market has Tondela at 2.35 (42.55% implied), and I'd put their chances a touch higher than that given the form they're in.
Key Points:
- Tondela have won their last 3 games, scoring 10 and conceding 1
- Torreense's away record over 20 games: 7W 7D 6L, 0.85 conceded per game
- No head-to-head meetings in the last 12 months; the record is historical only
- Tondela's home record over 20 games: 6W 7D 7L
- Torreense have won their last 2 away games
My pick: Tondela home win.
