Right then, let's have a proper look at this one. SC Paderborn are sitting pretty in 4th, dreaming of promotion, while 1. FC Nürnberg are stuck in mid-table obscurity. On paper, it's a home banker, but football's never that simple, is it?
Paderborn's form has been a bit up and down lately. They've beaten the teams they should beat – a 2-1 win over Preußen Münster and a cracking 4-0 away demolition of Karlsruher – but they've come unstuck against the better sides, losing to Schalke, Elversberg, and Hannover. At home, it's a mixed bag: they score a decent 1.6 goals per game but let in a worrying 1.8. They're a side that likes to have a go, averaging over 16 shots a game, but they can be got at.
Now, let's talk about Nürnberg. Bless 'em, they're a different animal on their travels. Their last four away days? Three losses and one win. They've been turned over 2-0 by Darmstadt, lost 1-0 to Schalke, and even got thumped 3-0 by Magdeburg. The most telling stat? They've only managed to score 0.5 goals per game on the road. That's pathetic, frankly. They can't buy a goal away from home. At home, they're a decent side – they've beaten the likes of Hannover and Elversberg – but pack their bags and they forget how to play.
The head-to-head history is a bit of a goal-fest, with over 2.5 goals landing in six of the last nine meetings. The last clash this season was a boring 0-0 draw, but before that we had a couple of 3-2 thrillers. Both teams have scored in most of them too.
So, what's the play here? Paderborn are the stronger side, in better league position, and at home. Nürnberg are dreadful travellers. All the momentum points one way. The bookies have Paderborn at 1.86 to win, which looks about right, but I think there's a bit of value there given the massive gulf in away form.
Key Points:
Paderborn are 4th, Nürnberg are 9th – a 10-point gap in the table.
Nürnberg's away form is dire: just 0.5 goals scored per game on their travels.
Paderborn average 1.6 goals at home but concede 1.8 – they're entertaining but leaky.
Head-to-head games often have goals (Over 2.5 in 6 of last 9).
- Nürnberg have lost 3 of their last 4 away matches, including to sides like Magdeburg.
Summary: Forget the fancy stats. This boils down to a promotion-chasing side at home against a team that can't score away. Paderborn should have too much for them. The value bet is on the home win.
