There's a pattern here that's hard to ignore. Derry City and St Patrick's Athl. have met three times in the last 12 months and every single one of those meetings ended level. 0–0 at Derry City's ground in May, 1–1 at St Patrick's in August, and another 0–0 back at St Patrick's in March. Three draws, three meetings, no winner. And at Derry City's ground specifically, the only recent meeting was that 0–0 on 22 May.
St Patrick's Athl. arrive in great shape. They've won their last three games — 1–0 at Sligo Rovers, 4–0 at Dundalk, and 2–0 at home to Shamrock Rovers — scoring 7 goals and conceding none. In their last five matches, they've kept four clean sheets and at least one team has failed to score in all five. Their away record over 20 games tells a similar story: 13 of those 20 finished with two or fewer goals, and they've kept nine clean sheets on the road.
Derry City are also in a good place. Three wins and two draws from their last five, no defeats, and they've scored in every single one of those games — 11 goals in total. At home over 20 games, they've won 9, drawn 6, and lost 5, scoring 1.75 per game. That scoring record is a slight worry for the under case, because Derry have been finding the net.
The counter-argument is straightforward: Derry City have been scoring freely. Three of their last five games went over 2.5 goals, and their home record shows 11 of 20 games finishing with three or more. If Derry's attack clicks on the day, the low-scoring pattern could break. St Patrick's did concede in their last five (2 goals), and Derry's home scoring average of 1.75 per game suggests they can find a goal or two.
But the weight of evidence leans the other way. Three consecutive draws in the head-to-head, all with two or fewer goals. St Patrick's recent form is a masterclass in tight, low-scoring football. Their away record is the most under-heavy in this matchup. The full head-to-head aggregate — 31 meetings spanning seven years — has 20 of 31 finishing under 2.5 goals.
Key Points:
- All three recent head-to-head meetings ended in draws (0–0, 1–1, 0–0), all with two or fewer goals
- St Patrick's Athl. have won their last three, scoring 7 and conceding 0, with 4 clean sheets in 5
- St Patrick's away record: 13 of 20 games finished under 2.5 goals
- Derry City have scored in all of their last 5 games (11 goals), which is the main risk to the under
- The full head-to-head record: 20 of 31 meetings finished under 2.5 goals
My pick: under 2.5 goals.
