Right then, let's talk about this proper Lisbon derby! Benfica and Sporting CP are going toe-to-toe, and what a cracker this should be. The league table shows these two are neck and neck - Sporting sitting second with 31 points, Benfica third with 28. Both unbeaten in the league, but Sporting have been nicking more wins.
Recent form tells an interesting story. Sporting have been absolutely flying, mate - 8 wins and 2 draws in their last 10 games. That's 80% win rate, proper impressive! They've been banging them in for fun too, netting 27 times (2.7 per game). Benfica aren't exactly mugs either with 7 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses, scoring 21 goals (2.1 per game).
Now here's where it gets interesting - the head-to-head record. You'd think Benfica would have the edge at home, right? Wrong! Their home record against Sporting reads 1 win, 3 draws, 0 losses. That's only a 25% home win rate, guv'nor! And get this - in 9 total meetings, both teams have scored in 7 of them. That's nearly 78% of the time, goals galore!
Looking at recent results, both sides are finding the net regularly. Benfica put five past Arouca, three past Guimaraes, and nicked a 2-1 win over Nacional. Sporting have been even more ruthless - four against Estrela, three against Club Brugge, and another three against Marinhense.
The odds are tighter than a Scotsman's wallet - Home win 2.75, Draw 3.25, Away win 2.45. The bookies reckon it's anyone's game, which makes perfect sense given what we're seeing.
Both teams are averaging over 2 goals per game, and while their defensive records are decent, derbies tend to throw form out the window. With both sides needing the points and the history of goals in this fixture, I'm expecting both teams to get on the scoresheet.
Key Points:
• Sporting have superior recent form (80% win rate vs Benfica's 70%)
• Head-to-head shows both teams score in 78% of meetings
• Benfica's home record vs Sporting is surprisingly poor (25% win rate)
• Both teams averaging over 2 goals per game recently
• League positions show just 3 points separating the sides
This has all the makings of a classic Lisbon derby with goals at both ends. Both teams have the firepower and the motivation to attack, and the history suggests we're in for goals.
