Right then, let's have a proper look at this Brazilian Serie A clash between Botafogo and Gremio. On paper, this looks like a home banker, but football's never that simple, is it?
Botafogo are sitting pretty in 5th place with 55 points, while Gremio are languishing down in 14th with just 40 points. That's a massive 15-point gap telling you everything about their seasons so far. The home side have been decent at their own patch - winning 60% of their home games and banging in 2 goals per game. They've had some proper results lately too, like that 3-0 hammering of Vasco and a 3-2 win over Sport Recife.
But here's where it gets interesting - Gremio's away form is absolutely shocking. We're talking zero wins away from home in their last five trips, scoring a pathetic 0.6 goals per game while letting in 2.0. They've been getting battered on their travels - 0-4 at Bahia, 0-2 at Corinthians, 0-1 at Cruzeiro. It's not pretty viewing for the Gremio faithful.
Now, I know what you're thinking - what about the head-to-head? And fair play, Gremio have historically had Botafogo's number, winning 5 of their 9 meetings. But here's the kicker - Botafogo's home record against Gremio is terrible: 0 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses. That's enough to make any punter think twice.
But let's look at the stats that matter right now. Botafogo are averaging nearly 20 shots per game at home with almost 8 on target. Gremio away? Barely 11 shots with just 2.4 on target. That's not just a gap, that's a chasm.
The odds have Botafogo at 1.62, which seems about right given the current form disparity. Gremio's away form is so poor that even their decent head-to-head record might not save them here.
Key Points:
• Botafogo 5th (55 pts) vs Gremio 14th (40 pts) - 15-point gap
• Botafogo home form: 60% win rate, 2.0 goals per game
• Gremio away form: 0% win rate, 0.6 goals scored, 2.0 conceded
• Historical H2H favors Gremio (5W-2D-2L) but Botafogo's home record vs them is poor (0W-1D-3L)
• Botafogo averaging 19.8 shots at home vs Gremio's 10.8 away
Sometimes you've got to ignore the history and go with what's happening now. Gremio can't win away, Botafogo are solid at home. The form book says home win, and that's where I'm putting my money.
