Right then, let's have a proper look at this Eredivisie clash. It's the league's bottom side, Heracles, welcoming a solid top-seven outfit in Twente. On the face of it, you'd fancy the away win and move on. But hold your horses, because the numbers tell a much more interesting story.
Heracles are propping up the table with just 14 points from 18 games. They've conceded a whopping 20 more goals than they've scored. Not pretty. But here's the twist: at home, they're a different animal. In their last five at their own gaff, they're scoring 3.4 goals a game! They smashed PEC Zwolle 8-2, put four past GO Ahead Eagles, and even gave PSV a proper scare in a 4-3 defeat. The problem is, they can't keep the ball out of their own net. Zero clean sheets in their last ten matches tells you everything. They're fun to watch, but defensively they're about as solid as a paper bag in a rainstorm.
Then you've got Twente. They're sitting pretty in seventh, unbeaten in their last ten across all competitions (five wins, five draws). They're the definition of steady Eddie. They don't score loads – just 1.6 on average – but they're rock solid at the back, conceding only 0.8 per game with four clean sheets in that run. They've ground out results against good sides like a 1-1 draw with Feyenoord and a 1-0 win over AZ. Interestingly, they seem to come alive on their travels, scoring 2.2 goals per away game, though they do concede more (1.4).
So what happens when an unstoppable force meets a very movable object? Heracles' leaky defence against Twente's decent away attack. And Heracles' rampant home attack against Twente's usually sturdy defence. The head-to-head history leans heavily towards Twente (four wins in the last nine), including a 2-1 win earlier this season. But history isn't playing this weekend.
Key Points:
Heracles at Home = Goals: 3.4 goals scored per home game on average. They've failed to score just once in their last five at home.
Heracles Defence = Charity: No clean sheets in ten matches. They concede nearly two goals a game.
Twente's Iron Curtain (Mostly): Four clean sheets in ten, but they are more vulnerable away (1.4 goals conceded per game).
Twente's Travels: They score more away (2.2 per game) than at home.
- Recent Form: Heracles are inconsistent (W4, D3, L3 last 10). Twente are unbeaten (W5, D5, L0).
The bookies have Twente as strong favourites at 1.62, which is probably about right. But the real value, in my book, lies in the goals market. With Heracles' 'you score, we'll score more (hopefully)' approach and Twente's ability to find the net on the road, I can't see this being a cagey 0-0. The goal expectancies are through the roof.
Summary & The Tip:
This has all the makings of a proper entertaining match. Heracles will attack because that's all they know how to do at home. Twente will have chances on the break and from their superior possession. I fancy both nets to be rattled. The odds for Both Teams to Score - Yes are a tempting 1.62. Given the stats, I reckon the chance of this landing is significantly higher than the implied probability of 62%. It's the simple, sensible play here. Back the goals.
