Look, I'm sitting here with my braai going and a cold one in hand, trying to work out this one, and I'll tell you - it's not as easy as it looks on the surface.
AZ Alkmaar are the ones to beat here, and the numbers don't lie. Over their last 10 games across all competitions, they've won 7, drawn 1 and lost 2, racking up 2.2 points per game. They're scoring 2.0 goals per game and conceding just 1.0. Their xG numbers back it up - 2.21 per game on the attack, which is a serious output. They beat Hapoel Beer Sheva 2–1 at home on 15 October, just three days before this kickoff, and that win kept their momentum alive.
But here's where it gets tricky, my friend. AZ's last two away games have been ugly. They lost 0–2 to Feyenoord on 10 October and 0–1 to Sunderland on 16 September in the Europa League. Both were shutouts, both were away. Their away record over 20 games is 8 wins, 3 draws and 9 losses, which is not the most reassuring track record for a team you're backing on the road. And in their last 5 games, 4 of them have finished under 2.5 goals, which tells you their output has been a bit flat lately.
Now look at Cambuur. They're not looking pretty over the last 10 - 2 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses, 0.8 points per game. They're conceding 2.4 per game, which is a lot. But their last 5 has been a bit more encouraging: 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. They beat PEC Zwolle 1–0 away on 11 October and thrashed NEC Nijmegen 3–0 at home on 12 September. Their home record over 20 games is 11 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses, 1.85 points per game, and they score 1.8 per game at home. That's a decent home base.
The head-to-head is entirely historical - the last meeting was back in February 2023, so we're looking at games that are 3 to 9 years old. In 11 meetings, AZ won 7, Cambuur won 0, and there were 4 draws. At Cambuur's ground specifically, AZ won both meetings (0–1 and 1–3). So the old numbers say AZ, but I'll be honest - those games are ancient and I'm not building my case on them.
The xG picture is the most telling. AZ are generating 2.21 xG per game and conceding 1.46. Cambuur are generating 1.1 xG per game but conceding 2.02. That's a significant difference in output and vulnerability. AZ are the better team, and the numbers say so clearly.
But and this is the big "but" - the price on AZ at 1.49 is telling you they're a 67% chance. And when I look at AZ losing both of their last two away games, failing to score in 2 of their last 5, and carrying a 9-loss away record over 20 games, I can't honestly put them above 55 to 60% for this one. The market is a touch rich on the away side. And the other markets - over 2.5, both teams to score - don't have a strong enough edge for me to feel comfortable either.
So I'm sitting on my hands, braai still going, and saying: no bet. The football says AZ should win, but the price doesn't give me the value I need to feel good about it.
Key Points:
- AZ Alkmaar: 7W 1D 2L in last 10, 2.2 PPG, 2.0 scored/game, 1.0 conceded/game
- AZ lost both of their last two away games (0–2 Feyenoord, 0–1 Sunderland)
- Cambuur: 2W 2D 6L in last 10, but 2W 2D 1L in last 5 with a 3–0 home win over NEC Nijmegen
- Head-to-head is entirely historical (last meeting February 2023); AZ won 7 of 11
- AZ xG for 2.21/game vs Cambuur xG against 2.02/game - clear difference in output and vulnerability
Verdict: No Bet.
