MexicoLiga MX
CF Pachuca and Cruz Azul are about to collide in Liga MX, and if you're a fan of goals — and I am, I'm The Big O after all — this one has the makings of a proper feast.
The numbers don't lie. CF Pachuca's home record over the last 20 games at this ground tells a story of open play: 12 of those 20 went over 2.5 goals, and 14 of 20 saw both teams find the net. Cruz Azul on the road? Even more entertaining — 13 of their last 20 away games produced three or more goals, and 16 of 20 had both sides scoring. When you stack those two records side by side, the floor for goals is high.
Look at the last five games for each side and the pattern is clear. Pachuca went over 2.5 in four of their last five — the 3–3 with Necaxa, the 2–2 with Tijuana, the 3–0 at Atlante, and the 2–1 loss at Monterrey all had three or more. Cruz Azul hit the mark in three of five, including that glorious 5–0 demolition of FC Juarez just four days ago and the 3–3 draws at Pumas and Toluca. Two teams that are scoring and conceding in equal measure are about to meet, and that's my kind of football.
The xG data backs it up. Cruz Azul are averaging 1.98 expected goals per game on the attack over their last five matches with xG data, while Pachuca's defence has been leaking 2.18 per game. Cruz Azul's own defence has conceded 1.2 per game, but Pachuca's attack is putting up 1.29. Add those up and you're looking at a combined expected goal count comfortably above three.
The head-to-head is a bit thin on recent meetings — just one within the last 12 months, a 1–2 at Cruz Azul's ground back in April. The older meetings at Pachuca's ground (0–1 in 2025, 2–4 in 2024) are historical and don't carry the same weight, but even those two games produced a combined seven goals. The full 23-game head-to-head aggregate shows 12 of 23 went over 2.5, and 11 of 23 had both teams scoring.
Now, the counter-argument. Cruz Azul's last two away games before the Pumas draw were scoreless losses — 0–1 at Monterrey and 0–2 at Inter Miami. Pachuca's most recent outing was a 1–2 loss at Monterrey, and their last two home games were draws. There's a small risk this becomes a tight, low-scoring affair. But I'd argue those scoreless away games for Cruz Azul were against specific opponents in specific contexts, and their overall away record of 1.8 goals scored per game and 1.55 conceded per game over 20 games tells a very different story.
Key Points:
The Big O's verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 1.71.
