Mr SimpleRight then, let's have a proper look at this Serie A clash. Udinese at home against Napoli – on paper, it's a bit of a mismatch, ain't it? Napoli are sitting pretty in second, level on points with AC Milan, while Udinese are down in 11th, a whopping 13 points behind. But football's not played on paper, is it?
Udinese's recent form has been all over the gaff. They've lost three of their last four proper matches, including a 1-2 home defeat to Genoa and a 0-3 thumping by Bologna on their own patch. Their only win in that run was a 2-0 victory away at Parma, who are down there scrapping. They can score at home – averaging over two goals a game in their last five at the Dacia Arena – but they leak 'em just as fast, conceding nearly two per game. They're a bit like a leaky bucket: exciting to watch, but you wouldn't back 'em to keep a clean sheet.
Now, Napoli. They're the real deal. They just beat Juventus 2-1 last weekend, which tells you everything about their quality. Their record in the last ten reads five wins, three draws, and only two losses. More importantly, they're tight at the back, with five clean sheets in those ten games. They don't score many on the road – just half a goal per game in their last four away – but they don't need to if they're keeping it shut at the other end.
The head-to-head makes for grim reading if you're an Udinese fan. In the last nine meetings, Napoli have won six and drawn three. Udinese haven't beaten them once. Not once! That's a proper mental block. Even at home, Udinese's record is no wins, two draws, and two losses. Napoli just have their number.
Looking at the numbers, Napoli average more possession (54% to 46%), more shots on target (4.4 to 3.3), and a much better pass accuracy (85% to 80%). They control games. Udinese might have a go at home, but Napoli's defence is organised enough to handle it.
Key Points:
Head-to-Head Hoodoo: Napoli are unbeaten in nine against Udinese (W6, D3).
Form Guide: Udinese have lost 3 of their last 4 competitive matches.
Defensive Rock: Napoli have kept 5 clean sheets in their last 10 games.
Goal-Fest Potential: Udinese's home games average a whopping 4.0 total goals.
- Table Talk: Napoli are 2nd, Udinese are 11th – a 13-point gap.
So, what's the shout? The bookies have Napoli at 1.85 to win. That's giving them about a 54% chance. I reckon that's a bit generous to Udinese. Given the gulf in class, the dominant head-to-head, and Napoli's solid recent form, I make them more like a 60% shot here. That's value, plain and simple. Udinese might nick a goal – they usually do when these two meet – but Napoli should have too much quality and come away with all three points.
Summary: Forget the fancy stats. Sometimes it's simple: the better team, with the better form and a psychological stranglehold over their opponent, wins the game. Back Napoli to do the business.
