Right, folks, The Big O is back and I'm telling you upfront: this one's got goals written all over it.
Ebbsfleet United have been absolutely feral in front of their own fans this month. Four home games in the last five weeks, and across their last five matches they've scored 16 goals while conceding just 3. That's 3.2 a game on the attack. The 6–1 hammering of Weston-super-Mare on 17 October and the 5–0 demolition of AFC Totton on 13 October are the kind of scores that make you grin from ear to ear. Even the 2–2 draw with Horsham on 20 October kept the goal count ticking. Their home record over 20 games tells the same story: 16 of those 20 went over 2.5 goals. That's 80 per cent, and I don't say that lightly.
Now look at the head-to-head. Three meetings in the last 12 months, and Ebbsfleet won all three. At Maidenhead's ground: 1–3 and 2–3. At Ebbsfleet's ground: 3–0. Every single one of those games had three or more goals. The 2–3 on 17 March and the 3–0 on 31 January show that even when Ebbsfleet are doing the heavy lifting, the other end isn't always silent.
Maidenhead, to be fair, have been in a bit of a scrap. Two losses in a row — 1–2 at Maidstone on 17 October and 0–1 at home to Tonbridge on 10 October. Their last five: 1 win, 1 draw, 3 losses. But here's the thing that keeps me smiling: four of those five went over 2.5 goals. The 4–0 away win at Chesham on 26 September and the 2–2 draw with Billericay on 12 September show they're not a team that hides. Their away record over 20 games is only 6 over 2.5, which is the one number that gives me pause. But their recent form — 4 of 5 over — and the fact that they've scored in 4 of their last 5 games tells me that old away record is starting to shift.
The counter-argument, and I'll give it its due: two of Ebbsfleet's last five games finished 1–0 and 2–0. And Maidenhead's away record of 6 over 2.5 in 20 games is genuinely quiet. If Ebbsfleet park the bus and Maidenhead sit deep, you could see a tight 1–0 or 2–0. But that's not what the last three meetings between these two have looked like, and it's not what Ebbsfleet's home form has been doing this month.
Key Points:
So here's my call. The Big O doesn't do nil-nil, doesn't do 1–0, doesn't do "boring." And this fixture is screaming goals. Ebbsfleet at home are a goal machine, the head-to-head is all over 2.5, and even Maidenhead's recent form keeps the scoring alive. I'm going Over 2.5 goals at 1.69.
