Alright, so I sat down with my beer to look at this one and the numbers just made the call for me. 1. FC Nürnberg have been absolutely cooking in this 2. Bundesliga, and Energie Cottbus are struggling to keep their heads above water.
Nürnberg's last 10 games across all venues read like a highlight reel: 7 wins, 3 draws, 0 losses. That's 2.4 points per game, scoring 2.6 a match and conceding just 1.3. They beat Hannover 96 2–1 at home on 11 September, took Karlsruher SC down 1–0 away on 19 September, and then put 3 past Ingolstadt at their own ground on 2 October. Even their 4–4 draw with Wolfsburg on 10 October showed they've got the firepower to score in bunches. Their xG numbers back it up too — 1.67 per game created over 4 matches with data, and they actually scored 15 goals in those same 4 games.
Now, Cottbus at home over 20 games isn't a disaster — 8 wins, 8 draws, 4 losses, 1.6 points per game. But their last 10 tells a very different story: 2 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses, 0.9 points per game. They're conceding 2.4 a game and their last outing was a 1–3 loss at Darmstadt on 10 October. The 4–4 draw at Wolfsburg five weeks ago and the 3–0 win at Karlsruhe four weeks ago are the only bright spots in a run that's gone sideways.
The counter-argument is that Cottbus's home record over 20 games is respectable, and they've scored in all 5 of their last 5 matches. But 0.9 points per game over the last 10 is hard to build a case on, and the fact that they've lost or drawn in 4 of those 5 games doesn't exactly scream home advantage. There's no head-to-head on record between these two, so we're flying on current form and venue records. And on that, Nürnberg's away record of 6 wins, 9 draws, 5 losses in 20 games is solid enough, but their recent form is what really sells it.
Key Points:
- 1. FC Nürnberg: 7W 3D 0L in last 10, 2.4 PPG, 2.6 scored/game, 1.3 conceded/game
- Energie Cottbus: 2W 3D 5L in last 10, 0.9 PPG, 2.4 conceded/game
- Cottbus home record (20 games): 8W 8D 4L, but recent form is poor
- No head-to-head meetings on record
- Both teams have scored in all 5 of their last 5 matches
Verdict: I'm going with the away win for 1. FC Nürnberg. The form difference is too big to ignore, and at 2.08 the price is fair for what I'm seeing.
