There's something quietly endearing about a match where the scoreboard might stay stubbornly low, and this one has all the ingredients for exactly that. KV Mechelen and St. Truiden meet at KV Mechelen's ground on 11 October, and the numbers whisper that at least one of these sides will go home without a goal.
The strongest thread runs through St. Truiden's away record. Over their last 20 games on the road, 12 of them have seen at least one team fail to score. More telling, in their last five matches across all venues, four of the five were BTTS no — including the 0–2 loss at SK Beveren on 12 September and the 0–2 defeat to KVC Westerlo at home on 20 September. Their current run is two straight losses, both scoreless for St. Truiden, and that pattern is hard to ignore when they travel to Mechelen.
KV Mechelen's own scoring struggles pile on the pressure. In their last five matches, they have failed to score in three — the 0–1 loss to Anderlecht at home on 11 September and the 0–4 thrashing by KVC Westerlo at home on 5 September stand out. Their latest 10 games show 7 of 10 with at least one side going blank, and at home over 20 games, 9 of those 20 have been BTTS no. The 0–0 draw at Lommel United on 19 September, just three weeks ago, showed they can park the bus, even if it's not always by choice.
The head-to-head adds a gentle nudge in the same direction. In the three recent meetings within the last 12 months, two were BTTS no: St. Truiden's 3–0 win at their ground on 24 May and their 1–0 victory on 21 December. The one exception was the 1–4 at KV Mechelen's ground in April. Across the full 25-meeting history stretching back to 2015, 14 of 25 have been BTTS no.
Now, the counter-argument is fair. KV Mechelen's home record over 20 games shows 11 of 20 with both teams scoring, and the one recent meeting at their ground did see both sides find the net. St. Truiden's xG figures in recent games — 2.05 per game for — suggest they create plenty of chances, and the 4–1 win at Antwerp in August proved they can score on the road. There's no guarantee the scoreboard stays quiet.
But the weight of the evidence leans toward a low-scoring affair. St. Truiden's away record and recent form tell a consistent story of a team that struggles to find the net on the road, and KV Mechelen's scoring drought at home makes it unlikely they'll break through. The market prices both teams to score at 1.57, but I see value in the other side of that coin.
Key Points:
- St. Truiden's last 5 matches: 4 of 5 saw at least one team score zero
- KV Mechelen failed to score in 3 of their last 5 matches
- 2 of the 3 recent head-to-head meetings were BTTS no
- St. Truiden's away record: 12 of 20 games saw at least one team go blank
- KV Mechelen's home record: 9 of 20 games saw at least one team go blank
I'll back both teams not to score at 2.4.
