Leicester vs Peterborough: The Foxes Need to Find Their Feet
Preview
Right, so Leicester are hosting Peterborough at home on 10 October, and if I'm being honest, this one's a bit of a puzzle. Both teams have been all over the place recently, and the head-to-head between these two is so old it's basically a museum piece — the last time they met was back in 2018, so there's no recent history to lean on. The head-to-head is dated, and I'd rather look at what's actually happening in front of us.
The numbers do tell a story though. Over their last 20 home games, Leicester have won 7, drawn 3 and lost 10, scoring 1.5 a game. Peterborough's away record over 20 games is 6 wins, 3 draws and 11 losses, with 1.1 a game. So the Foxes tick a few more boxes at home — they score more, they pick up more points per game (1.2 to 1.05), and they keep more clean sheets (4 out of 20 versus Peterborough's 2). That's a nudge in Leicester's favour, and it's the strongest football case I can point to.
But here's the rub. Leicester's last five has been a bit of a rollercoaster. They lost 0–4 to Oxford United at home on 5 September, then beat Fulham U21 6–1 in the EFL Trophy, drew 1–1 at Barnsley (with a Barnsley red card in the 26th minute), won 4–3 at Stockport County, and then lost 1–2 at Stevenage just four days before this one. Two wins, a draw, two losses. Peterborough's last five is almost identical — two wins, a draw, two losses — including a 4–1 win over Ipswich Town U21 at home on 6 October and a 0–1 loss at Stockport County on 26 September.
So both teams are in the same boat, really. Three wins, three draws and four losses in their last 10 across all competitions. Leicester score 1.7 a game and concede 1.7; Peterborough score 1.7 and concede 1.6. The scoring is up there for both, and over 2.5 goals has hit in 6 of their last 10 for each side. Both teams have failed to score in a handful of those games — Leicester in 2 of 10, Peterborough in 4 of 10 — so there's a slight edge to the Foxes on the attacking front in the recent stretch.
The counter-argument to a Leicester win is pretty straightforward: they've been leaky. They've conceded 11 goals in their last five, and they've only kept 2 clean sheets in their last 10. That 0–4 home loss to Oxford is not a great look for a team expected to be favourites, and the 1–2 slip at Stevenage four days ago shows they're not sitting pretty. Peterborough, for all their inconsistency, have conceded 16 in their last 10, which is slightly better, and they've got that 4–1 win in the bag just a few days ago.
The market has Leicester at 1.6 to win, which prices them at 62.50%. I'd put their chances a touch lower, maybe in the mid-50s, given the recent form and the fact that Peterborough are not a team that just folds when they're on the road. The over 2.5 at 1.44 (69.44% implied) and both teams to score at 1.53 (65.36% implied) both look tempting given the scoring, but I can't honestly rate either of those high enough to feel comfortable backing them. The prices are tight, and the form is too mixed to give me the confidence I'd need.
Key Points:
- Leicester's home record (7W 3D 10L in 20) edges out Peterborough's away record (6W 3D 11L in 20)
- Both teams are in identical recent form: 2W 1D 2L in their last five
- The head-to-head is entirely historical — last meeting was in 2018
- Scoring is high for both sides: 6 of last 10 games over 2.5 for each team
- Leicester's 0–4 home loss to Oxford and 1–2 away loss to Stevenage show defensive fragility
No Bet.
