Match preview
EnglandLeague One
Right, folks, welcome back to another one of my previews, and I'm absolutely chuffed to be looking at this one. Leicester host Wigan in League One on 27 October, and if you've got a taste for goals — and I do, I'm The Big O after all — then this fixture is singing to you.
Let's start with the most compelling number in this preview: Leicester have gone over 2.5 goals in every single one of their last five matches. Five out of five. That's not a coincidence, that's a pattern. The 4–0 thrashing of Bromley on 20 October, the 2–1 win over Doncaster on 17 October, the 1–3 loss to Peterborough on 10 October, the 1–2 defeat at Luton on 24 October, and the 1–2 loss at Stevenage on 6 October — every single one of those games had three or more goals. When a team is producing that volume of goals on both ends, you know the scoreboard is going to be busy.
Now, look at Leicester's home record over 20 games at their ground: 12 of those 20 went over 2.5 goals. They average 1.5 goals scored per game at home and concede 1.6. That's a team that opens up, that doesn't sit deep and park the bus. Their xG numbers back this up too — across four recent games with data, Leicester have generated 1.93 xG per game on the attack, while opponents have been creating 1.01 xG against them. That's roughly three goals of expected action across those recent games.
Then there's Wigan on the other end. Their away record over 20 games is 2 wins, 6 draws, 12 losses, and they concede 1.75 goals per game on the road. That's a leaky backline. In their last five matches, three of those went over 2.5 goals, and their xG against figure across five recent games sits at 2.0 per game. They're being scored on at a rate that keeps the over side smiling.
The head-to-head here is dated — all three meetings between these sides stretch back six to thirteen years, so I won't pretend it tells us anything about the current setup. What it does show is that Leicester won both times at their ground, 2–0 each time, but that's ancient history. The real story is written in the last few weeks.
Now, the counter-argument, because I'm not a fool. Wigan's away record does include 11 of 20 games going under 2.5, and two of their last five matches finished 1–0 and 0–1. Leicester's form has been patchy — three losses in their last five, and they picked up a red card at Luton on 24 October. If Leicester's attack goes quiet and Wigan sit deep, you could see a low-scoring affair. But the xG data and the goal totals say that's the less likely path.
Key Points:
So here's my verdict: I'm going with over 2.5 goals at 1.51. The evidence is strong, the xG numbers back it up, and I can't imagine a more natural fit for a tipster whose name is literally built around the letter O. Life's too short for nil-nil, and this one looks like it's going to deliver the goods. The Big O is in.
