QPR vs Derby: Championship Clash Points to a Tight, Low-Scoring Affair

Preview

Mr Simple

QPR and Derby are set to meet at QPR's ground on 14 October, and if the last few weeks of football are anything to go by, this is going to be a scrappy, low-scoring affair.

QPR have been in a bit of a strange place recently. Four draws in their last five – 1–1 at West Ham, 2–2 at home to Preston, 1–1 at West Brom, and 0–0 at Charlton – with the only blemish being that 0–1 loss to Middlesbrough back in September. They've scored four and conceded five across those five games, and that 2–2 with Preston came with a red card in the 15th minute, which made for a chaotic afternoon. Their xG numbers tell a decent story though: 1.63 expected goals per game for, and just 0.95 against. They're creating chances and keeping things tidy at the back, even if the results aren't turning into wins.

Derby, on the other hand, have been struggling. Three losses in their last five – 0–3 at West Ham, 0–1 to West Brom at home, and 1–2 to Birmingham – with just two draws to keep them afloat. They've scored three and conceded eight, and their xG against is sitting at 1.62 per game, which is a bit worrying. Their xG for is 1.01, which suggests they're not really creating enough to win games. Six losses in their last ten is a tough stretch to bounce back from.

Now, the head-to-head in the last 12 months goes to Derby – they won 3–2 at QPR's ground in April and 1–0 at their own ground in October. But that's just two games, and both teams have changed quite a bit since then. The older meetings – a 4–0 for QPR in 2025, a 2–0 for Derby in 2024 – are historical and don't really tell us much about where these sides are now.

Looking at the longer records, QPR at home over 20 games have 8 wins, 4 draws and 8 losses, scoring 1.65 per game and conceding 1.5. Derby away over 20 games have 8 wins, 2 draws and 10 losses, scoring 1.45 per game and conceding 1.45. QPR edge it slightly on points per game – 1.4 to 1.3 – and on goals scored, but it's a tight one.

The counter-argument is that Derby won both recent meetings and that QPR haven't won in five games. A side that's drawn four straight can find themselves on the wrong end of a 1–0 or 2–1. And Derby's away record, while not great, does show they can score – 1.45 per game over 20 away games. There's also the fact that QPR's home record includes 14 of 20 games going over 2.5 goals, which is the opposite of what I'm tipping.

But here's the thing that keeps pulling me back to the under: QPR have had four of their last five games finish under 2.5 goals, and Derby have had three of their last five. The xG totals for both sides sit right around 2.5 to 2.6, which is the exact line we're betting on. The longer records lean over, sure, but the last few weeks are what matters most here, and they're screaming low-scoring.

Key Points:

  • QPR have drawn 4 of their last 5, with 4 of those 5 finishing under 2.5 goals
  • Derby have lost 3 of their last 5 and conceded 8 goals in that span
  • Both recent H2H meetings went to Derby, but that's just 2 games
  • QPR's xG against is 0.95 per game; Derby's xG for is just 1.01 per game
  • QPR at home over 20 games: 8W 4D 8L; Derby away over 20 games: 8W 2D 10L

My verdict: I'm going with under 2.5 goals. The recent form is telling a clear low-scoring story, and while the longer records lean the other way, the last few weeks are what matters most here.
