Preview
Right, folks, welcome back to the Big O's corner of the pitch. And if you've got a taste for goals – which I assume you do, because you're reading my previews – then this one's got my ears pricking. RB Bragantino host Cruzeiro on 13 October, and the numbers are singing a pretty loud tune about where the goals are going to land.
Let's start with the guest. Cruzeiro have won their last two games, scoring five and conceding just one in the process. In their last five matches, they've racked up 10 goals at 2.0 per game, and four of those five finished with three or more goals on the board. Their away record over 20 games shows 11 of 20 going over 2.5, and in their last 10 across all grounds, 8 of 10 have crossed that line. This is a side that is scoring with intent, and they're doing it on the road.
Now look at the host. RB Bragantino have won zero of their last five. They've conceded 8 goals in those 5 games – 1.6 per game – and haven't kept a single clean sheet. Their home record over 20 games shows 1.4 goals scored per game and 1.05 conceded, but the recent form is telling a much more leaky story. They drew 1–1 with Mirassol six days ago and lost 2–3 to Bahia five weeks before that. The defence is open, and that's exactly the kind of gap a side like Cruzeiro will exploit.
The head-to-head adds fuel. The most recent meeting, back in April at Cruzeiro's ground, finished 2–1. Across 10 meetings spanning three years, 6 of 10 have gone over 2.5 goals. The older meetings at RB Bragantino's ground – three games, one win and two draws – are historical and don't really tell us much about where we're heading now. What matters is that the recent meeting had three goals, and the pattern of 6 out of 10 over 2.5 is a solid baseline.
Now, the counter-argument, because I'm not a fool. RB Bragantino's home record over 20 games only goes over 2.5 in 8 of 20 – that's 40%. Their last five matches have only produced over 2.5 in 2 of 5. And the 20-game combined scoring picture – 1.4 from Bragantino at home plus 1.1 from Cruzeiro away – sits right on the 2.5 line. So there's a real chance this ends 1–1 or 2–0, and I won't pretend the home record isn't a headwind for the Over.
But here's the thing: the 20-game records are a long lens. The last five games tell a far more urgent story. Cruzeiro are scoring at 2.0 per game and RB Bragantino are leaking at 1.6 per game. When you stack those two numbers, you're looking at a match that should see well over three goals. The H2H backs it up. The recent form backs it up. And the Big O doesn't do nil-nil, so this is where my money goes.
Key Points:
- Cruzeiro have scored 10 goals in their last 5 games (2.0 per game) and won their last 2, keeping it to 1 goal conceded.
- RB Bragantino have won 0 of their last 5, conceding 1.6 per game with no clean sheets.
- 6 of 10 head-to-head meetings have finished with over 2.5 goals; the most recent was 2–1.
- Cruzeiro's away record: 11 of 20 over 2.5; RB Bragantino's home record: 8 of 20 over 2.5.
- The market prices Over 2.5 at 1.8, implying 55.56%, but the recent scoring and conceding patterns point to a higher probability.
The Big O's verdict: Over 2.5 goals.
