Swansea and West Ham are set to collide at Swansea on 17 October, and if you're with me, you already know what I'm hunting for: goals. Plenty of them.
The case for a high-scoring affair is hard to ignore. West Ham have been a goal machine over their last 10 games, with 8 of those 10 producing more than two goals. Their last five matches have been even more prolific — 4 out of 5 went over 2.5, including a 6-0 demolition of Wrexham and a 3-2 win at Bolton. Even their two most recent draws (1-1 against QPR and 2-2 at Millwall) saw both teams find the net. On the road, West Ham's 20-game away record shows 11 of 20 games finishing over 2.5, with an average of 1.45 goals scored and 1.5 conceded per game. That's a team that opens up on the road and invites the other side to join the party.
Swansea, meanwhile, have been in red-hot form. A four-game winning run (8 goals scored, 3 conceded) has them flying, and 4 of their last 5 matches have crossed the 2.5-goal line. At home over 20 games, they've scored 1.5 per game and conceded 0.9, but their last 10 across all venues have seen 6 of 10 games go over 2.5. The xG numbers back it up too: Swansea are averaging 1.73 expected goals per game in their recent matches, and West Ham sit at 1.72. Two teams creating chances at that rate are going to find the net.
The counter-argument? Swansea's home record over 20 games has only produced 9 over-2.5 results, which is below the halfway mark. Their defensive record at home is tidy at 0.9 conceded per game, and the head-to-head is entirely historical — stretching back to 2012 and 2018 — so it tells us nothing about how this fixture plays out today. West Ham's current run of two draws might suggest a cagey, low-scoring pattern, though the 2-2 at Millwall did finish over 2.5. Still, the longer home record does raise a question: can Swansea's home defence hold firm against a West Ham side that scores on the road?
Key Points:
The Big O doesn't do nil-nil, and this one's got the ingredients for a proper goal fest. I'm going Over 2.5 goals at 1.67.
