Vitória began on 13 May 1899, when Artur and Artêmio Valente, brothers, gathered seventeen other young men to found it. The first football match came on 22 May 1901 against International Sport Club, a team of English seamen, at Campo da Pólvora. The club won its first title in 1908, the Campeonato Baiano, but then stayed amateur and waited until 1953 to turn professional. The 1990s brought the best years: a run of Baiano titles from 1990 to 2000 made Vitória the top club in the state, and in 1993 they finished runners-up in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A behind Palmeiras on an extremely small payroll. In 1999 they reached the semi-finals. A poor campaign in 2004 led to relegation, and in 2005 the club slid, for the first time ever, to the third division. Promotion back to the top flight came in 2007, but 2010 and 2014 brought more relegations. Vitória dropped to the third tier again in 2021, then won promotion in 2022 and the second division in 2023, the club's first national title.
