Fredrikstad Fotballklubb was founded on 7 April 1903 and reached its first Norwegian Cup final in 1932. Fredrikstad claimed the first nationwide league title in 1937–38 and added the double the season after. As league champions in 1960, Fredrikstad became Norway's first entrant in the European Cup, with a 4–3 home win over Ajax and a goalless draw in Amsterdam. Relegation first came in 1973, and in 1992 the club dropped to the third tier, where it stayed until 2002. Another relegation from the top flight in 2012 was followed by promotion back in 2024.
Fredrikstad's league titles came in 1937–38, 1938–39, 1948–49, 1950–51, 1951–52, 1953–54, 1956–57, 1959–60 and 1960–61. The Norwegian Cup has been won in 1932, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1940, 1950, 1957, 1961, 1966, 1984, 2006 and 2024, and the Norwegian First Division in 2023.
Fredrikstad Stadion opened in 2007 and holds 12,565. It stands on the site of Fredrikstad Mekaniske Verksted, an old shipyard in the centre of the city known as Værste and once the largest in Scandinavia, and two defunct mechanical workshops dating back to 1870 were converted into stands at the sides. The previous ground, inaugurated in 1914, was the first in Norway with floodlighting, and the club's record attendance dates from 1956, against Larvik Turn.
