St Johnstone grew out of cricketers who took up football on the South Inch, Perth's public park alongside the Tay, in the autumn of 1884. Regular flooding and an outgrown venue pushed the club across the city, and in 1924 it built Muirton Park. The Scottish Cup debut in 1886โ87 ended in a 7โ1 first-round replay defeat by Erin Rovers, and the club joined Division Two in 1911โ12 in place of Port Glasgow Athletic. The 1969 League Cup final was lost to Celtic, and in 1970โ71, under Willie Ormond, the Saints finished third and so earned a place in Europe, in the 1971โ72 UEFA Cup. Successive relegations in 1984 and 1985 set a record, and by 1986 the club skirted financial oblivion until Geoff Brown stepped in. The First Division title came in 1990, in the first season at McDiarmid Park, and third place in 1998โ99 earned a spot in the 1999โ00 UEFA Cup. On 13 April 2014 the club reached its first Scottish Cup final by beating Aberdeen in the semi-final, and in 2020โ21 it won the League Cup and Scottish Cup double. Relegation on 14 May 2025 was answered by the Championship title on 21 April 2026.
