Tromsø began on 15 September 1920 as Tromsø Turnforenings Fotballag, Turn for short, and became Tor in 1931. A 16-year spell in the top division ran from 1986 to 2001, and under Tommy Svensson the club took bronze in 1989 and silver in 1990. Rune Lange's 23 goals in 1999 made him the division's top scorer, the first from a Northern Norwegian club. Relegation in 2001 was the first in the club's history, and winning the 1. divisjon in 2002 brought an immediate return. The 2011 Tippeligaen ended with Tromsø second, five points behind champions Molde.
