Norwegian champions in 1978 and 1980, Start entered the European Cup in 1979 and again in 1981. After taking the 1. division in 2004 they climbed straight to second place behind Vålerenga in 2005, which earned a UEFA Cup place for 2006. They beat Skála and, on penalties, Drogheda United before Ajax stopped them in the first round. Promotion came again in 2012. From 12 July 2015 to 18 September 2016 they played 39 consecutive Tippeligaen games without a win.
