Liverpool were founded in 1892 when Houlding, left with an empty Anfield after Everton moved to Goodison Park, started a new club to fill it. They joined the Second Division in 1893–94, reached the First Division in 1896 and won a first league title in 1901 under Tom Watson. The real revolution came with Bill Shankly, appointed soon after a defeat at Worcester City in 1958–59, who won promotion in 1962 and the league in 1964. Paisley then built the great European side: the European Cup in 1977 and 1978, plus further league titles and a League and Cup double under later management in 1985–86. Roy Evans won the 1995 League Cup, and Houllier landed a treble of FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001. Benítez delivered the 2004–05 Champions League with a penalty shootout win over AC Milan after a 3–3 draw. Klopp took the club to successive Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, winning the latter 2–0 against Tottenham Hotspur, and Arne Slot arrived in 2024 and promptly equalled the record with a twentieth league title.
Anfield is the home of Liverpool, built in 1884 on land next to Stanley Park, and the club has played there ever since Houlding founded it in 1892. The capacity is 61,276, up from the 45,276 left by the all-seater conversions after the Taylor Report. The Kemlyn Road Stand was rebuilt in 1992 to mark the club's centenary, and in 2012 the owners chose to redevelop Anfield rather than build a new stadium in Stanley Park. Shankly put up a sign in 1972 reading 'This is Anfield' to unsettle the opposition, and on European nights the noise is a genuine edge for the home side.
Two rivals matter for Liverpool, and they matter for different reasons. Everton are the longest-established, a Merseyside derby born of Liverpool's formation and a dispute with Everton officials and the owners of Anfield. Inside the city Liverpool fans outnumber Everton supporters by 2:1, which gives the derby a flavour of the big brother against the neighbour. Manchester United are the national enemy, a rivalry that stems from the competition between the two cities during the Industrial Revolution. They took turns at the top from 1964 to 1967, Manchester United were first among English clubs to lift the European Cup, in 1968, and Liverpool followed with four of their own. France Football ranked them the two biggest clubs in England, and both have global fanbases, which is why the fixture pulls in crowds such as the 101,000 who saw them in Michigan in 2018.
Against Everton, Liverpool come out on top more often than not: 7 wins, 2 draws, 1 defeat (all competitions).
