Albion's story has more dips than peaks. Founded in 1901, the Football League's brand-new Third Division took them in 1920, after a spell in the Southern League, then won the Third Division South in 1957–58 to reach the Second Division. Relegation in 1962 and 1963 sent them down to the Fourth Division, a first. The glory years came under Alan Mullery, who lifted them into the First Division in 1979 after a second-place finish in the Second Division, though they dropped out in 1983 after finishing bottom. The 1990s were grim: a play-off final defeat to Notts County in 1991, relegation in 1996 and, in 1997, the sale of the Goldstone Ground to property developers, forcing two seasons of home games at Gillingham's Priestfield, some 70 miles off. Fan leader Dick Knight took control that year, a lease at Withdean Stadium arrived for 1999–2000, and Tony Bloom replaced Knight as chairman in May 2009. Promotion to the Premier League followed on 17 April 2017 with a 2–1 win over Wigan Athletic, and on 21 May 2023 a 3–1 win over Southampton sealed European football for the first time.
The Brighton Community Stadium, opened in 2011 and holding 32,176, ended a long wait for a proper home. The sale of the Goldstone Ground in 1997 left the club without a stadium for 14 years, and the final season there, 1996–97, was spent fighting to stay in the Football League. The green light arrived on 28 October 2005, when government confirmed the Falmer application had succeeded. The club got the keys on 31 May 2011, with an initial 22,374 seats, and the first league match of 2011–12 brought Doncaster Rovers, the last visitors to the Goldstone in 1997. Plans submitted in 2020 aimed to stretch the capacity from 30,750 seats to 32,500, with extra hospitality. The ground sits in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean on the edge of the city.
Crystal Palace are Brighton's main rival, even though the clubs sit almost 40 miles apart. The feud dates to the 1970s and a feud between Alan Mullery and Terry Venables, in charge at Brighton and Palace respectively from 1976, before a Third Division campaign that also featured Mansfield Town. Mansfield won the title, both Palace and Brighton went up, and the bad blood between the two managers had by then become an intense rivalry between the clubs. It carried on into the following Second Division season, when Palace won a postponed game against Burnley the next weekend to take the title by a single point. The A23 road runs from Brighton to Croydon, where Selhurst Park stands, and the media have tagged it the A23 or M23 Derby, though supporters shun the label. Because Brighton sit in East Sussex, they have no established local Derby. Matches against Southampton and Portsmouth are sometimes called south coast derbies, but fans of either side rarely see it that way.
3 wins for Brighton, 3 for Crystal Palace and 4 draws in 10 meetings: hard to separate (all competitions).
