Parma began in July 1913 as Verdi Foot Ball Club, named to mark the centenary of the composer Giuseppe Verdi, a native of the province. League football began in 1919–20, and the club was a founder member of Serie B in 1928–29. The court ordered the club into liquidation in 1968, and on 1 January 1970 a local side, A.C. Parmense, took over the licence of the old club. The golden years began when Nevio Scala became head coach in 1989. Promotion to Serie A came in 1990, sealed by a 2–0 win over Reggiana in the Derby dell'Enza, and money from Parmalat took the club into UEFA competition in 1991. Carlo Ancelotti rebuilt the squad and finished second in 1997, a club-record league finish. Alberto Malesani delivered a cup double in 1998, and Hernán Crespo left for Lazio in 2000 for a world record fee. The fall was as sharp as the rise: insolvency was declared in April 2004 after the collapse of Parmalat.
Parma have played at the Stadio Ennio Tardini since moving in during 1923, and the ground holds 27,906. Before that the club moved around the city. In December 1914 it began using a plot by the Via Emilia, next to the Eridania refinery and the Ferraguti works, then returned to the Piazza d'Armi before moving on to the Tre Pioppi. The stadium that was finished differed greatly from Ennio Tardini's vision for it. The first team has trained at the Centro Sportivo di Collecchio since 1996, 15 kilometres south-west of the ground, which the refounded club bought in 2018 for about €3 million.
Reggiana are the one that really stings. The Derby dell'Enza grows out of an old rivalry between the cities of Parma and Reggio Emilia, and none of the club's opponents are hated more. Bologna come next in the Derby dell'Emilia, a meeting of the two biggest trophy-winners in Emilia-Romagna. Juventus is the big-stage rival, built on duels that include Parma's 1995 UEFA Cup victory, two Coppa Italia triumphs, losses in the Supercoppa Italiana in 1995 and 2002, and a cup final defeat in 1995. There is a twist in the colours too: Parma swapped white and black for yellow and blue at home in the late 1990s to put distance between themselves and Juventus. There are local derbies too: Modena are met in the Derby dei Ducati and Piacenza in the Derby del Ducato, while Cremonese and Carrarese are also seen as rivals, and Vicenza and Genoa are fought over keenly.
No defeat against Reggiana in four for Parma, across 4 recorded meetings (all competitions).
