Birmingham began life in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, playing from 1877 at Muntz Street. Professional status came in 1885, and three years on the club became football's first limited company, run by a board. In 1892 the side was invited into the new Football League Second Division, adopted the name Birmingham in 1905, and reached a first FA Cup final in 1931, losing 2–1 to West Bromwich Albion. The name Birmingham City came in 1943, and 1954–55 brought the second-tier title. The 1950s then made history: the club became the first English side in European competition, played in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and were the first English club to reach a European final, losing to Barcelona in 1960 and to A.S. Roma in 1961. They also beat Internazionale home and away in the 1961 semi-final. The low point came in 1989, when the club slid into the Third Division for a first time, and the Kumar brothers bought it that April. In 2011 Birmingham beat favourites Arsenal 2–1 in the League Cup, through goals by Nikola Žigić and Obafemi Martins.
St Andrew's in Birmingham opened on Boxing Day 1906 and holds 29,409. It rose on the site of an old brickworks, ground that fell away to stagnant pools, and was completed in under twelve months. The attendance record dates from February 1939, when Everton visited in the fifth round of the FA Cup, recorded as either 66,844 or 67,341. Floodlights went in during 1956, and were switched on in 1957 for a friendly against Borussia Dortmund. After the last home game of 1993–94 the Kop and Tilton Road terraces came down, and supporters took pieces home as souvenirs. The Railway Stand followed in 1999, and was renamed the Gil Merrick Stand ten years later. Asbestos removal then shut the lower sections of both the Tilton and the Kop, and these reopened fully in November 2023.
Aston Villa are the great enemy. They are Birmingham's nearest neighbours, the fixture is the Second City derby, and the rivalry is long-standing and fierce. Birmingham supporters name Villa as their main rivals, and a 2003 Football Fans Census survey found Villa supporters returning the sentiment, though that was not always the case. The sweetest chapter came in 1963, when the two met in the League Cup final. Villa went in as pre-match favourites, yet Birmingham raised their game, won 3–1 on aggregate and lifted their first major trophy. Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, fellow West Midlands clubs, make up the lesser rivalries, but none of them carries the weight of a Villa fixture, and that cup final shows why Birmingham fans circle it.
Birmingham have won only 0 of 7 against Aston Villa, losing 5 (all competitions).
