Simba began in 1936 as The Queens, took the name Sunderland and became Simba, Swahili for lion, in 1971. They reached the CAF Cup final in 1993 and the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2025, which makes them the most successful Tanzanian club in international competition. IFFHS ranked them fourth in Africa for the period from 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2025.
