Angers came into being in 1919, the same year the national federation was set up. For most of the next century they were a club that bounced between divisions. They reached the second tier for the first time in 1945, and the third tier claimed them more than once, with 2006–07 the final time they dropped that low. The turning point came with promotion from Ligue 2 in 2014–15 after years stuck in the lower division. The reward was immediate respectability: ninth place in 2015–16, then a 14th-place finish in 2017–18 in which Cameroon striker Karl Toko Ekambi scored 17 goals. A 13th-place finish followed in 2018–19. On 28 May 2017 the club played in the Coupe de France final against Paris Saint-Germain, the biggest night in their modern story. In June 2020 they set a new club transfer record by paying 8 million euros to Bordeaux for Paul Bernardoni. Relegation arrived in 2022–23, with five matches still to play and eight years in the top flight ended. They climbed straight back for 2024-25.
Angers play at the Stade Raymond Kopa, a ground in the heart of the city that first opened in 1912, which makes it older than the club itself. It holds 18,752 people, a size that suits a team of Angers's stature: big enough to feel like an occasion when a heavyweight visits, small enough that a full house gets properly loud. The stadium carries the name of one of France's great footballing figures, and it is where Angers do the bulk of their work in the league. For anyone weighing up a bet, the point is simple: home advantage matters at a place where the crowd is close and the visitors know it.
