Elche came together in the winter of 1923, when every football team in the town merged into one club. The first league season was 1929–30 in the Tercera División, with promotion to the Segunda División following in 1934. Two promotions in a row at the end of the 1950s lifted them to La Liga, sealed with a 3–0 win against Tenerife in 1959, and the best league finish came in 1963–64, fifth. In 1969 they reached the Copa del Rey final, the only one in their history, after beating Pontevedra, Valencia and Real Sociedad. Relegation arrived in 1971 after twelve seasons, and a second spell lasted five more before 17th place out of 18 in 1977–78. The 1980–81 finish was the cruellest: second with one game left, they needed only a draw at home to Cádiz, lost, and ended up level on 45 points with four other clubs. Promotion in 1988 produced a last-place finish, and relegation to Segunda División B followed in 1990–91. The comeback began with the 2010–11 play-offs, where Granada won on away goals, and then on 18 May 2013, Elche went up automatically after 24 years away. Promotion by beating Girona 1–0 on aggregate in 2019–20, relegation in 2022–23 and promotion again in 2024–25 completed the latest cycle.
Hércules are the fiercest of Elche's rivals, a feud that has run for a long time and comes from regional proximity. Real Murcia share that character, the clash with them being a historical one and tied to the same closeness on the map. Levante's story is different: it grew out of numerous competitive clashes, and these sides have met across the Primera, Segunda and Segunda B, which creates a fierce atmosphere. The newest rivalry is with Granada, which flared up in the tense Segunda División campaign of 2010-11 and ended in the play-off final.
This is a tough fixture for Elche: Levante have beaten them 6 times in 10 meetings (all competitions).
