Stade Rennais began life on 10 March 1901, set up by a band of former students. On 4 May 1904 it merged with rivals FC Rennais, with the aim of overcoming the domination of the regional league by US Saint-Malo, and Welsh manager Arthur Griffith finally led Rennes past that rival in 1908. The club spent decades moving between the divisions. The best league finish for a long time came in 1948–49, fourth place under Franz Pleyer, and promotion back to Division 1 arrived in 1958. In 1971 Rennes won the Coupe de France by beating Lyon 1–0 in the final, a penalty from André Guy deciding it. On 23 May 1972 the club took its present name, Stade Rennais Football Club. A bleak period followed, with the club close to bankruptcy in 1978 and hovering between the top two divisions until 1994. The turning point came in 1998, when François Pinault bought the club from the municipality and invested in a training centre, finished in 2000. Rennes tied their best finish in 2004–05, and in 2019 they won the Coupe de France by beating Paris Saint-Germain 6–5 on penalties.
Rennes play at the Roazhon Park, a ground that holds 29,778 and opened in 1912. The opening match came on 15 September 1912 against SA du Lycée de Rennes, and the stadium, which is owned by the city, was reworked in 1955, again in 1983 and once more in 1999. The 1983 work took its inspiration from the Olympiastadion in Munich, and after nearly four years of building the finished ground opened its doors on 7 March 1987. Two inauguration matches were staged in 2004, a match between Bosnia and Herzegovina and France that August and a game against Metz two months on. The club trains at the Centre d'entraînement Henri-Guérin, known as La Piverdière, which opened in June 2000. A sizeable, passionate home crowd makes Roazhon Park a tricky place to visit.
