Europe's other league table
Every European week there are two contests going on. One is the match on your screen. The other is a slow, rolling league table that most fans ignore until spring, when somebody works out that fifth in the Premier League might be worth a seat at Europe's top table.
That second table is the UEFA coefficient. It decides how many clubs each country sends into Europe, which round they enter at and who gets protected in the draws. It's why a Conference League win on a freezing Thursday in Cyprus or Norway matters to fans who'll never watch the game.
It moves betting markets as well. Once you know how the points are earned and when they count, the race for the Premier League top five looks different. So does a mid-table side's motivation in April, and so does the value in European outrights. This explainer takes you through how UEFA coefficients work from top to bottom, with the 2026/27 numbers as our worked example.
