Right, so we've got Inter Miami hosting DC United at home, and if you've been keeping an eye on the numbers, this one's got a goal fest written all over it.
Let's start with the most telling stat in this fixture: Inter Miami have scored in every single one of their last 20 home games. Not one blank sheet. Not one game where they failed to find the net. Twenty for twenty. That's a habit, and habits are hard to break. On top of that, 18 of those 20 home games have seen both teams find the scoresheet, which tells you the defence at home is letting things in as well as the forwards are putting them up. Miami average 2.65 goals per game at home and concede 1.8, so the net is getting a good workout on both ends.
Now look at DC United on the road. Over their last 20 away games, they've failed to score in 6 of them, which means they've found the net in the other 14. And 13 of those 20 away games have been both-teams-to-score affairs. So when you stack Miami's record of 18 BTTS yes out of 20 at home against DC's 13 out of 20 on the road, the overlap is massive. The recent form backs it up too. Miami have seen both teams score in 4 of their last 5 games, and DC in 3 of their last 5. The head-to-head, even going back a few years, has been a goal-fest: 9 of 12 meetings have had both sides on the scoresheet. The only recent meeting, back in March at DC's ground, ended 2-1 to Miami, and both teams found the net.
The xG numbers add another layer. Miami have generated 1.94 expected goals per game over 5 matches and scored 13 actual goals — they're outperforming their chances. DC, on the other hand, have generated 1.75 expected goals per game over 5 matches but only scored 4 actual goals. That's a big gap between what they've created and what they've finished, and it suggests a scoring bounce-back is coming. When a team is creating that much and not converting, the goals tend to catch up.
Now, the counter-argument. DC United have failed to score in 2 of their last 5 games, and they've drawn 2 of those 5. Their away record is heavy on draws — 10 out of 20. Miami, for their part, have drawn 3 of their last 5 and lost their most recent game 1-2 at Columbus. Both sides are in a lost-last-one run, which can make for a cagey, low-scoring affair. And if DC keep underperforming their xG, a blank sheet from them isn't out of the question. The draw at 5.6 is there if you fancy a level score, but the numbers don't really back it.
But here's the thing: Miami haven't failed to score at home in 20 games. That's not a trend you ignore. And DC, despite the recent dip, still score in the majority of their away games. The xG data actually suggests DC are due a bounce-back — they've created more than they've scored, which means the goals are coming. The price on both teams to score is 1.47, and I rate the chance of both sides finding the net at around 75%, which sits comfortably above the market's 68% view. The evidence is strong, the numbers don't lie, and I'm happy to back it.
Key Points:
- Inter Miami have scored in all 20 of their home games, and 18 of those 20 have seen both teams score
- DC United have failed to score in only 6 of their last 20 away games, with 13 of those being BTTS yes
- Both teams have seen both sides score in 4 and 3 of their last 5 games respectively
- The head-to-head has been a goal-fest: 9 of 12 meetings have had both teams on the scoresheet
- DC's underperformance in actual goals versus their xG suggests a scoring bounce-back is likely
My tip: both teams to score.
