Right, so we've got Gillingham hosting Grimsby on 24 October, and if you've been following the form books, this one's got a proper story to tell.
Gillingham have been in good shape. Two wins, two draws and one loss from their last five, and they're scoring at a rate of two goals a game. That 4โ1 away hammering of Rotherham on 10 October and the 4โ3 thriller against Brighton U21 at home on 13 October showed they've got the fire. Yes, they dropped points to Accrington ST 3โ1 on 17 October and drew 1โ1 with Port Vale on 20 October, but the overall picture is one of a side clicking and scoring. Their last 10 across all venues reads 5 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses โ 1.7 points a game โ and that's a solid run of form.
Grimsby, on the other hand, have been in a bit of a mess. Zero wins from their last five. They've managed two draws โ a 2โ2 at Rochdale on 20 October and a 0โ0 with Burton Albion on 6 October โ but the other three have been losses, including a 0โ2 at home to Northampton where they had a man sent off in the 61st minute. They've failed to score in three of those five games, and their goal tally across the last five is a meagre three. Their last 10 reads 2 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses โ 0.9 points a game. That's a massive gap against Gillingham's 1.7.
Now, the head-to-head is a bit thin on recent meetings. The only one within the last 12 months was back in April at Gillingham's ground, and Grimsby won 4โ1. That's a concerning result for the hosts, but it's six months old and the form since then has swung hard in Gillingham's favour. The older meetings โ going back to 2024 โ are historical record and don't really tell you where these teams are now.
Looking at the venue records over 20 games each, Gillingham at home have 7 wins, 4 draws and 9 losses, scoring 1.1 a game but conceding 1.7. Grimsby away have 6 wins, 8 draws and 6 losses, scoring 1.3 a game and conceding 1.1. So Grimsby's away defence is a touch tighter, and their away scoring is a bit better. But the current form gap is the real story here.
The xG numbers back it up too. Gillingham have been outperforming their expected goals โ 6 actual goals from 4.1 xG across three recent games. Grimsby, meanwhile, have been underperforming on the attack (2 goals from 5.73 xG) and overperforming defensively (conceding 5 from 2.45 xG against). That defensive overperformance isn't likely to last.
The counter-argument? Grimsby did win that April meeting 4โ1, and their away record over 20 games is respectable. They also showed they can score with that 2โ2 at Rochdale just four days ago. And the market has them as favourites at 2.2 for the away win, implying a 45.45% chance. But I think the market is leaning on that H2H result and Grimsby's broader record rather than what's actually happening on the pitch right now. My own read puts Gillingham's chances closer to 45%, which sits well above the 30.77% the market is implying for the home win.
Key Points:
My pick: Gillingham home win at 3.25. The form gap is too big to ignore, and the price offers proper value against what the market is saying.
