AustraliaA-League
Right, folks, The Big O is back and I'm itching for goals. Macarthur host Perth Glory in the A-League on 17 October, and this one has the smell of a proper goal-fest in the air.
Let's start with the numbers that make my heart sing. Macarthur at home over the last 20 games have gone over 2.5 goals in 16 of those 20. That's a remarkable 80% of their home fixtures producing three or more goals. Their last five matches across all grounds have seen over 2.5 in four of five, and at home they average 1.8 goals scored and 1.7 conceded per game — that's 3.5 goals a game on their own patch. Perth Glory away, meanwhile, average 1.05 scored and 1.65 conceded per game over 20 away games, which still puts the combined expectation comfortably above the 2.5 line.
The head-to-head adds fuel to the fire. In the last three meetings within the past 12 months, two of them went over 2.5: Perth Glory's 3–1 win at their ground on 12 April and the 2–2 draw at Macarthur's ground on 6 February. The full 15-meeting record shows 9 of 15 games producing three or more goals, and Macarthur's home record against Perth Glory in the recent window includes a 2–2 and a 0–2, both of which had at least two goals on the board.
Now, the counter-argument, because I'm not a fool. Perth Glory's last five matches have only gone over 2.5 in two of five, and their away record over 20 games shows 11 over and 9 under. Their most recent outing — a 1–3 loss to Adelaide United at home on 3 October — was a friendly. Macarthur's own last five also had three games where at least one team failed to score, including a 0–0 draw at SD Raiders on 11 August. So there's a real chance this one stays tight, and I'd be a fool to ignore that.
But here's the thing: Macarthur's home record is the single most telling number in this fixture. 16 of 20 home games over 2.5, with 1.8 goals scored and 1.7 conceded per game. Perth Glory's away defence concedes 1.65 per game over 20 fixtures. When you stack those up, the 2.5 line is the natural landing spot, and the market's 58.82% implied probability sits just below where I'd put my own estimate. I rate this at roughly 63%, which gives me a genuine edge on the price.
Key Points:
The Big O's verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 1.7.
