NorwayEliteserien
Look, I'm sitting here with my braai going and a cold one in hand, and I'm trying to work out this one. Start at home against Sandefjord in the Eliteserien, and honestly, the numbers are telling me something that the market doesn't quite reflect.
Start have been in a bit of a mess lately. They lost 1โ6 at Molde on 18 October, then dropped 2โ4 at home to Ham-Kam on 11 October. That's their current run: lost the last two, scored 3, conceded 10. Before that, they did get a 5โ1 win at Raufoss in the NM Cupen and a 2โ1 home win against Brann in a friendly, but those two losses have really rattled them. And if you go back five weeks, they lost 0โ3 to Sandefjord at their ground, with a red card in the 56th minute.
Now look at Sandefjord. Yes, they lost 0โ2 at home to Lillestrom on 18 October, but before that they drew 1โ1 at Rosenborg and won 1โ0 at Flint. Their last 10 games show them conceding just 0.9 per game, with 4 clean sheets in that stretch. That's a tight defence. Start, by comparison, are conceding 2.1 per game in their last 10. That's a big gap, and it's the kind of thing that gets you in trouble when you're already leaking.
The head-to-head in recent meetings is clear: Sandefjord won both of the last two meetings, 3โ0 and 3โ2, both at their ground. Now, this is at Start's ground, and there haven't been any meetings here in the last 12 months. The older games at Start's ground are historical โ a win, a draw, and a loss for Start โ so I can't really lean on those.
Start's home record over 20 games is 10 wins, 3 draws, 7 losses, scoring 1.75 per game. That's not bad. But their last home game was the 2โ4 loss to Ham-Kam, and the form since has been poor. Sandefjord's away record over 20 games: 8 wins, 3 draws, 9 losses, scoring 2.25 per game. They score more on the road than Start do at home.
The xG numbers back this up. Start's xG against is 2.63 per game over three matches, and they've actually conceded 11 in those games. Sandefjord's xG against is 1.62 per game over five matches, with 5 actual goals conceded. Sandefjord's defence is doing the work, and Start's back line is struggling to hold a shape.
The market has Start as the slight favourite, but I think that's reflecting the home tag more than the actual form on the ground. Sandefjord are the stronger side here, and Start's recent defensive collapse is hard to ignore. At 3.13, the away win is the value I can back with a clear conscience.
Key Points:
My pick: away win for Sandefjord.
